Hi,

So I'm getting a dedicated server at SoftLayer and I think I'm just going to get a low-end server to start with until I require something more powerful. Here are the specs:

Single Processor Dual Core Xeon 3050 - 2.13GHz (Core2Duo) - 1 x 2MB cache
2 GB DDR2 RAM
100 Mbps uplink
2000 GB bandwidth

For how much web traffic is this server good for? Will it be fine for now? Any spec you recommend I upgrade?

Also, I need advice choosing a Linux OS from the following:

CentOS 5 (32 bit)
CentOS 5 (64 bit)

CentOS 4 (32 bit)
CentOS 4 (64 bit)

Fedora Release 10 (32bit)
Fedora Release 10 (64bit)
Fedora Release 9 (32bit)
Fedora Release 9 (64bit)

Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (32 bit)
Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 Etch/Stable (64 bit)
Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 Lenny/Stable (32 bit)
Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 Lenny/Stable (64 bit)

FreeBSD 6 Latest (32 bit)
FreeBSD 6 Latest (64 bit)
FreeBSD 7 Latest (32 bit)
FreeBSD 7 Latest (64 bit)

Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake (32 bit)
Ubuntu Linux 6.06.1 LTS Dapper Drake (64 bit)
Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron (32 bit)
Ubuntu Linux 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron (64 bit)

Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - 5 (64 bit)

Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (32 bit)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux - ES 4 (64 bit)

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (32 bit)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (64 bit)

Which should I choose and 32 or 64 bit?

Thanks for any advice you can give

SoftLayer have a great network.

Use the coupon YIPP to get double ram and another 250gb hdd (don't forget to check 4gb ram and 250gb secondary hard drive on the order form).

With 4gb ram, you will need CentOS 64-bit. I would also recommend you get cPanel/WHM.

It is a very powerful server, and is quite high budget there are other providers that can provide something cheaper.

You should note that this also doesn't include management. I have some servers with SoftLayer, if you have any more questions you can drop me a PM.

I assume that first of all you need to find the dedicated server provider according to your requirements and then you need to ask for the recommendation. I assume that any web hosting service provider will be able to install nemed OS for you.

Post that in the request section and I believe that soon you will start get direct offers from weh hosting companies representatives

I suppose that the choice of your OS should be based on the needs you currently have. Some of them has + some - regarding the web progect you have or what you are going to do on the server

I was with Softlayer until a few months ago -- one thing I would recommend before going with a 64 bit OS is asking whether they'll install Cpanel on it (if you want that). Back when I was with them Softlayer wasn't offering servers with the 64 bit version.

Really? Interesting.

I've had a 64 bit CentOS with cPanel for over 2 years.

Yeah that's what I found weird when I went with them -- it was around June 2008 I believe and 64 bit cPanel had long been out however Softlayer wasn't allowing their servers to have it -- sure puzzled me. Ended up going with a cheaper server because I couldn't figure my way around without cPanel.

Really? Interesting.

I've had a 64 bit CentOS with cPanel for over 2 years.

64bit is for servers with 4GB ram or more. Without that there is little point in having 64bit OS.

That is that. First you chose OS and then you choose dedicated sever solution, unless you have the server first
