Marilee Jones, the dean of admissions at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, became well known for urging stressed-out students competing for elite colleges to calm down and stop trying to be perfect. Yesterday she admitted that she had fabricated her own educational credentials, and resigned after nearly three decades at M.I.T. Officials of the institute said she did not have even an undergraduate degree.

Pretty amazing, especially for a school like M.I.T :o

I'm surprised that when she first applied for the job with her resume that no one checked her credidentials its quite surprising really that she managed to coverf it up for 28 years, i know i sure couldnt lie for that long. You'd think someone would check though but shes obviously smart if she was able to hold out that long!

The lack of credentials didn't affect her performance? It goes to show the importance of education now-a-days.

I agree with Mr. Websites.

The article talks about how she changed the systen a bit. It takes someone who could not handle the system as it is to change it.

I think that this sets a good point to people that degrees don't mean everything.

Its tragic when a person's year of goodwill and hard work looses its significance due to a wrong doing years ago.

I was totally taken by the news, having recently gone through the admission office myself, I have seen the way she had been trying to make the institution more dynamic and more interesting by giving passion/accomplishments in other fields, equal weight as academics. The way she revamped the application had quite a positive impact. All my friends there have tremendous respect for her, they always described her as quite an inspirational lady.

You can see her blog here http://www.mitadmissions.org/Marilee.shtml

I really hope that the incident does not badly damage the campaign she is leading for a more humane admission processes in all the universities.

Just go through Ben's Blog http://www.mitadmissions.org/Ben.shtml & McGann http://www.mitadmissions.org/Matt.shtml and you will see for yourself how transparent have they made the whole process in the past couple of years...

I remember hearing a story some time ago of someone who had applied to be a surgeon in a leading US hospital claiming he had been to certain universities etc. The hospital did not bother checking and for a few weeks he got away with carrying out operations on patients using a manual.
