DDOS Attack

My servers have been under a DDOS attack, rendering them useless the past few hours. At first I thought it was a recent update done incorretly, however the hacker has a posted a message explaining the attack on a forum I own. It basically said that if I don't shut down a site a run the attacks will continue. The attacks have stopped now. I'm certainly not going to shut down the site.

What can I do to reduce the effects of the DDOS attack? What, if any, legal action can I take (if it's even worth the trouble) for the revenue losses I incurred.

Thanks

i dont think it would be worth your time trying to take legal action because tofind this person then sue them would take more time and money then its worth

you could take toyour host about them possible trying to stop the DDoS'es from having an effect or change the way you server accepts them, im fairly sure you can block most DDoS attacks if you configure your firewall properly

Don't count on it. You can't stop a big DDOS with a firewall.
You'd need to pay $$$$ for the kind of setup to soak a DDOS.

I feel for you, NTS. It's bad enough if your host goes down for "normal" reasons...

Ok thanks for the repies. I won't bother setting any firewall up just yet, I'll see how far this goes first. They can't DDOS me forever.

They can literally ddos your site into oblivion if they want to.
It won't hurt to set up a firewall. It could end up that you have to shut the site down and change the IP.
Without hardware protection there really is no foolproof and efficient way to limit a ddos attack.

I'm thinking they arn't going to bother attacking me for too long. Right now they havn't attacked for a few hours. Even if they decide to start again, I really can't see why me taking down my site is such a big deal, so they probably won't waste they're time for too long. If it get's out of control I guess I'll have to get a firewall though.

Probably they won't continue for long.
Most of these attacks are done by mentally challenged little hacker wanna bes who get bored with it quickly.

Actually taking a lawsuits can earn you up to $3 billion in damage plus 50% of losses. So persuing a DDoS could make you more than you lost in retrospect.

Case Microsoft vs. Dave something can't remember his name but they won the lawsuit, he was sent to jail and had to pay up for damages plus 50% of loss. Many companies are now persuing DDoS attackers and if it little kiddies, the parents are then the ones on trial.

NTS-- I had ddos problems back in August/September, at first my servers were down for 2 weeks because my provider at that time couldn't do anything, and they kept saying they'd work on it and that they were trying to fix it.

Then I switched to ThePlanet-- and they still tried to ddos me, but ThePlanet was able to damper most of the attack.

Conclusion-- idk if I'd wait it out, but I'm not sure what else you could do.

Regards,
Ron Johnson
