I can think of an application. You divide the site into the functional groups; mechanical, mining, chemical etc. Then you buy or develop a mailing list for each specialty somehow; then you send out daily a short blurp on a latest development for each specialty. And build on that with the core site offering monetization and development of the lists. Commercial opportunities flow from this.

That's all I can think of.

If you have the means and know how, I'd suggest setting up a blog using word press and a nice newspaper theme, and set it up like a news paper / e-zine for engineers, build some traffic and page rank, then try to sell it. As is you wont get more than regfee.
