CSS two column question

Well I've got a two column layout, with a footer below it. The left column will house most of the content and will be stretching if the content surpasses the default size.

Now here's the problem, as the left column scales up vertically, I want the right column to stretch to match it, even if there is nothing in it. I'm kind of lost on this one and I need some help.
