Hi you guys out there,

I'm relatively new to webdesigning and have a million questions that are probably stupidly easy for you seasoned programmers and designers. Any way here goes, would very much appreciate your help, answers & comment.

The site I designed last is
www.idebverkstedet.no

While working on that I had a few bit management problems challenges:

since it is a local site, many people would be watching this through 56K modems or relatively slow connections: I had to keep it small (it is now 1.1 MB)

Q: What is a realy, realy good compressor that works? Doesn't have to be free!

Q: I made it in Swish and have upgraded now to SwishMax, any fellow Swish users out there?

Please give me your uncensored feedback and I'll gve you mine!
Let's work together and all get better!
Robbert

if your site is going to be accessed by 56k users, why did you make it flash?

Thanks guys,

the compressor I'm looking for is one that compresses awhole site to a smaller file size, so that it loads faster. I hear some of them can save approx 50% without jeoperdizing quality too much.

Appreciate your comments and advise.

By the way, this is the site I'm talking about:

www.ideverkstedet.no

for a small advertising agency in Oslo Norway.

Thanks for the positive advise, I can see I shouldn't bother you any longer with my stupid stuff, sorry to take your time. What I really think is, how the hell did you get started that you feel you have to talk to me this way, or were you always this fantastic? Having people like you on a forum is not going to help anybody!

There's actually quite a few of these types of utilities out there. I have used one in the past, but I can't remember the name of it.
Here's one I found from a quick search on google http://www.atompark.com/products/html2zip.htm .

If you have PHP access you may want to check out ob_gzhandler() http://www.webdesigntalk.net/function.ob-gzhandler.html It could be as simple as adding a couple lines of code. And also the PHP Zlib Compression Functions http://www.webdesigntalk.net/ref.zlib.html . :)

Hey I just did another quick search and came across this http://www.swishapp.com/optimizer.htm . If you compress your html and all your flash files then you may just end up with some worthwile compression.

Hello Robbert,

No question is a stupid question when you are learning something new. I'm new to some of the coding languages myself, so the only way you can get answers is to ask, regardless of what others may think. If you need help, thats what we are here for, so please ask.

As for the comments made, if someone is asking for help then try to help them out, don't answer with rude remarks that will make the person asking the question feel insulted. Alot of people who are new to web design and coding will not ask questions because they feel as if others will make them feel dumb because they are new, and that is not what our forums are about!! We are here to help people not insult nor make them afraid to ask questions when they are unsure of something.

If they ask for help, then be nice and try to help them if you can, there is no need to be rude, or reply with unnecessary comments, don't make replies such as for example, : "It sucks" or "I hate it", offer some helpful advice, or tips that you think will make the site look better. Be polite and helpful, after all everyone on this forum was new to designing and coding at one point in time.

Thank you bobbi, we appreciate you keeping the peace. As for the site. 56k can download flash at a fair rate but most people click off when it comes to animation. Even a friend of mine who uses the new power book says they bog his computer down. I honestly think two versions of this site would make it a lot better, say a high bandwidth and low bandwidth. Isn't there a script that'll help you figure that out and automatically redirect them? Might want to look into that.
