i have a contest at my forums going that for everytime you post you get one ticket so the more you post the better chance you have. the prize is a psp that i got for free and since i already have one i figured i would offer it up as a prize for posting do you think that this strategy is smart or would you go at it a different way. I was just wondering cause i can still change the contest before it gets too far into it

It sounds like an interesting (but great) idea.....

However might i suggest that if you can afford it that you should think about giving away multiple prizes...

Like have one grand prize winner, and then a few runner up prizes (obviously cheaper than a PSP). That way there will be some extra encouragement.

this is a good idea, and as suggested above, i would have multiple prizes. this way, people who join later will still have the incentive to post. be sure to have a contest start/end date and hold the contest for about a few months.

you can try deviantart or hijack other forums. you could also amend the contest so that referring someone to the forum = 10 posts or something ;).

good luck!!

Contests are a very good way to jumpstart forums, as well are good for established communities as well.
