Curious to hear the opinions of fellow NamePro members as I don't have much particular experience in dealing with name domains.

I've recently come across the opportunity to purchase a common American firstname.net and not sure where to place the value on it. Input would be appreciated.

you could use estibot at this point to give an estimate of traffic search for that family name ,secondly being .net it will most probably not be worth more than $200 USD on the high end .

But then again a domain is only worth what a buyer with a need for it is ready to pay

Maybe if its Trump.net ..lol
Number one you did not specify the name , but the average family in dot net will not sell for mor than 200 according to all the past sales in the last 10 years with a very very few exceptions of highly sought after names.
I it was dot.com then thats a different story

It's a first name.

Example:
Amber.net sold for $1,272.. in 2005. This name is just as common if not more common.

Your example is very interesting because Amber.net was for sure bought for the amber Alert and that is where the value could spike , when the first name is also a common word and even with that $1272 retail price is not high at all .

For example Amber.com is probably valued somewhere in the $500,000 USD

But for the most part .net domains are not close to having values of .com names

Nothing stops a wealthy person with a need of paying 100k for a dot net name if his ego wants it but in the domaining world 99 percent of the time it will be a hard sell.
