Hey,

Just bought this beauty and now I need to develop it. Right now I'm playing around with a Mambo installation... www.CoderPost.com

So let me know your vote...

1 Mambo with integrated forums (I do not like this option!!)
2 Forums with integrated features & services (I'm okay with this)
3 My own custom script ... please post suggestions (This I like a bit more ;))

I am not afraid of doing 2 or 3 but number one I do not like so far.

Actually I do not like #1. I would prefer 2 or 3.

What are your detailed suggestions then for CoderPost.com and the option you select? Which forum software? I like SMF myself, and will probably be using it, although I LOVE the skins phpBB has... e.g. www.basicforums.com -> I LOVE that one!

Detailed and good ideas get NP$ :D

-Matt

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

ok well I think you should make a site like sitepoint. Where you have information on the homepage and stuff, and then the forums on thier own page

There's a few things you could do with it.

Make a site like hotscripts.com where users can submit their own scripts to the site.
Or you could make a forum to help people with their coding problems.

Stay away from using Mambo. I've heard its pretty easy to hack.

Yeah, I'm going to uninstall mambo.

Are there any detailed ideas as for what the homepage should be, what should be implemented into what... etc?

What about having a hostscripts kind of site, with integrated forums?
I know you don't like it, but it would really be nice. I mean, then you can also discuss the scripts, and so on.
Good luck!

Well, the way I built a site lately was just invent a little something to include pages upon request using a certain $_GET value. I got it going using mod_rewrite so the URLs are quite funky. Then, in every page you can write a script for the part of the site you want. Eg, if you browse to site.com/?p=forums or site.com/forums/ , you'll include forums.php which is a script to a forum. That, you include and voila, you have a site with anything you want.

Have to admit, this is the first thing I thought of when I saw the domain in the subject...

Make sure you check this value carefully before including anything - I've seen too many people fail to do this and allow remote code to be run on their site

Yeah, the .htaccess idea is alright but very risky.

I like the freelance idea - should it be based with forums or a custom script? (Forums WILL go on that site I don't care WHAT you think, so what should be integrated with what?)

NP$ when this is figured out :)

forums are okay for non-commercial type community sites...... but when you're talking about a commercial freelance site, forums are a big no-no. Let me explain why.

First of all, when I say a commercial freelance site, I mean that for every project that gets finalized and completed through your site, you would get something like 15% of the $-value of the project...

In order to avoid situations that encourage a buyer or seller's personal details to get exposed, you absolutely wouldnt want a forum on the site !

have a detailed look at rentacoder.com
a custom script is the way to go.

A public forum would not be good for a professional freelance site. Instead use a custom script, and just display testimonials if you want, but not a forum.

First off, if you are going to go with number one, don't go with Mambo. Open Source Matters, the original creators of Mambo, just came out with Joomla. They will not be updating files for Mambo anymore and Joomla will be the new Mambo. Surprisingly, not many people know of this. I use it at work and it is decent, but I still prefer coding.

I was thinking your site could be a cool forum. You could write custom scripts and have rewards for script of the month or week. You could also have different ranks associated with what the person is good at. You could hold contests for different scripts and even generate pages with a bunch of different users scripts. I know that I always have a hard time finding a great place to find all the scripts I need. Also, there are a million popups on the site and they suck. If you could make one great forum, for a bunch of scripts with incentives, your site would rule, I would join!
