What is the most common cms/script/template today for just a basic website? Or, is everyone hand coding with html?

What are you using?

most people code their own and use it or use a precoded one and just edit it to their preference

Xplicit perhaps you already know this but you can Google "web templates" and you'll get many choices, many of them free.

I have been seeing a lot of people use Wordpress and Joomla for their CMS needs. I hope I helped!

I use joomla, wordpress and sometimes I just hand code websites. I guess it really depends on what you want to do with your website. If you plan to have lots of pages then I recommend using a cms like joomla or wordpress. I usually only hand code them if the site has less than 20 pages.

For simple page, use Dreamweaver, it's good for newbie to know more of html/css and discovering some new website layout, just use ur imagination :)

PHP-Nuke is quite popular. With hundreds of modules, plugins, and addons, it's easily customizable to any website's needs.

Other popular CMS's off the top of my head: Drupal, Mambo, Joomla, Xoops, Post-Nuke, and Geeklog. A lot of these CMS's have third party templates/themes created by companies and designs for sale, and even for free.

Many sites can be created today without too much programming or HTML knowledge at a relatively cheap price.

Typically I lean towards Joomla or Wordpress in most situations.

Joomla in my opinion is best for a portal type website where there will be user contribution and in a case where feedback is important. With a plethora of add-ons and extensions the possibilities of what you can do with it are almost endless. Check extensions.joomla.org for a database of what type of things you can add on. Wordpress in my opinion is best for an informational type website where you only need limited functionality.

Either way you can go wrong with either one of these. If you are interested in seeing other CMS's check out: http://www.opensourcecms.com/

I agree. Because most of the CMS that are there have much more functionality then needed. Thus it confuses and creates problems for a new person who is just starting out as a webmaster. More files more code leads to more bugs and loopholes that people find out for this open source things.

They are good to use in some cases and they aren't in the others.

Xplicit if you can describe your needs or be some more detailed on this point then I think someone will be able to guide you properly. Right now telling Joomla or XOOPS or PHP-Nuke would be a good answer but not a perfect one that would eventually help you out.

Thanks.

I would say Wordpress is the most used. It can be customized into pretty much anything.
