Clueless about transfer from Sedo - Help!

I am not very clever as regards domains to be honest - especially with the technical stuff. Really could do with some help guys!

A few days ago I bought my first ever domain after winning a sedo auction - it's a co.uk domain. I would like to transfer this to one.com who I have another domain hosted with.

However, I am totally clueless about what happens next regarding the transfer process. The current status is that I've paid and we're now waiting for the seller to respond. So, please bear with me and forgive and stupidity but would I be right in thinking that -

When the seller responds to sedo they will transfer the domain into their control?

And then I have to make a request to one.com to then transfer it away from sedo?

Or can it be directly transfered into a one.com account straight from the seller?

Would appreciate any help!

Many thanks!

While Sedo transfer agents can be useless - they may actually do the transfer either way - direct seller to buyer or via a Sedo escrow account.

My recommendation would be to be patient and wait for instruction and help. It is his job to ensure the transfer is done properly.

Occasionally they may try to avoid an escrow account and do a direct transfer; however, I wouldn't recommend this to any seller. The NORMAL and PROPER way would be to do what you say - transfer to Sedo who then deals with you. When the domain is in Sedo's possession you should be able to make a transfer request. GoDaddy has a transfer lock - if you encounter that then the Sedo agent should contact GoDaddy to have it removed for you imho.

The Transfer Agent should have all your answers but basically you are right.

BTW:

Generally it is recommended that you keep hosting and domains separate - especially if they are valuable domains. You should be able to run hosting and content without them having the domain.

Definitely ONLY accept transfer from Sedo, not directly from the seller - a lot can go wrong if the domain is not coming to you from Sedo's account. Since Sedo are offering an escrow service, they really can't refuse to do it the safe and proper way.

also for any future transactions would recommend escrow services especially when selling domains as there are fraudsters who directly pay you through paypal and then do a reverse transaction on the payment once the domain is with them. it's best to ensure a safe transaction even though the broker takes a 10% cut

I bought a .co.uk on sedo and the seller did a direct nominet (the uk registry) transfer. The transfer was concluded in MINUTES! If the seller initiates a regsitrant change at nominet, you get an email from nominet asking you to confirm transfer and either you or the seller pays for the transfer. There is a ยฃ10 (or so fee)! All .co.uk registrant transfers still need to be done at the nominet end anyway, otherwise, the name will sit in your account but retain the old owners name!

This is why a SELLER should NEVER do it. Sedo can't "confirm" the new owner has the domain and won't release funds.

You've taken ALL the risk. Sedo contract provides numerous outs for them.. and little protection for you.

Hey thanks guys! Very informative.

Actually, it seems to be sorted now. I used Nominets online system and it's now transferred over.

Not such a painful process after all it seems but then again my seller was very quick to do his bit and seemed a nice, helpful guy. I'm sure domain transactions aren't always this easy!

Thanks again.
