Cloud computing is becoming a game changer in the IT industry and yet this is just the beginning.

It is looking more that the word "CLOUD" may be in the categories of other terms like "ONLINE" , "WEB" , "NET" , "INTERNET" ,etc.

Can this also be a game changer for the domain name industry?

Are you referring to the big G cloud idea? I know when I was studying for my CCNA the cloud concept seemed relatively old. It's an interesting idea but I don't see what or how it would affect the domain industry.

I got me some good cloud domains - I hope the name and the concept takes root.

The only true cloud product I have found that even begins to live up to the potential of the idea is Apple's me.com. I've only used it for photo hosting but it is a pretty robust, easy to use and powerful desktop located in the cloud.

I think Microsoft is going to botch this one horribly though, at least their first time out.

It will be huge, but not sure it really presents an opportunity for domainers.

FYI Amazon just announced an Elastic MapReduce service on top of EC2/S3.

"Cloud"
was "Grid"
was "Cluster"
was "Mainframe"

It's just the currently fashionable name for a virtualised server farm.
It won't change domaining.
It's just another keyword IMHO.

I agree with -NC-. Cloud computing is the term for the service or the structure, call it as you wish. But companies offer their cloud computing solutions under their make-up names. Such as Azure from Microsoft, Network.com from Sun, EC2 (Elastic Cloud Computing) from Amazon.com etc. And for the terms like cloudcomputing, cloudcomputingsolutions etc. all coms, nets and orgs are taken at years 2002-2003. Anyway, you can try your luck to find some.

Ditto that ... NC is spot on. Cloud computing is a fancy term for distributed hosting.

Cloud computing in its purist form utilizes the resources of other computers that happen to be connected to the internet and are willing to accept, process, serve data in and out on demand, such as file trading services.

Sounds great, but for most corporate uses, such level of sharing resources of unknown / untrusted parties presents all sorts of problems, such as reliability, SLAs, security, liability, and control.

With all that said, "cloud" is a hot word right now, so it's worth grabbing some that aren't regged / dropping / very low priced - don't bet the ranch on them.

I have been in tech sales for over ten years now and currently work for a major IT player is the SAS market. Cloud computing will be the biggest thing since the internet was invented.

It will be a game changer in the SMB market and as far as the consumer market goes they are already in the cloud.

^^^^ Yes, it's going to be huge. I've been watching the cloud chatter pickup on Twitter recently. MediaTemple has a great product at $20/month.

it is a tempting offer to let cloud computing vendors deal with the hardware. for example, one could build a whole app on google. our business has not gotten over the fear factor yet with developing onto somebody else's platform.... but it is tempting.

Do you mean their GRID service which is, according to them "Cluster-based":

mediatemple.net said:
a cluster-based, modern hosting service powered by hundreds of servers working in tandem to power your websites

I actually use mediatemple, they are good. But I wonder how long until they rename the grid ( cluster based ) service to a cloud ( grid based ( cluster based ) ) service.

cloud = super computer composed of huge numbers of servers, on which you rent space and cpu time

cluster = super computer composed of huge numbers of servers, on which you rent space and cpu time

grid = super computer composed of huge numbers of servers, on which you rent space and cpu time

mainframe = super computer composed of one huge box, on which you rent space and cpu time

The cloud offerings that are out there, vary greatly. AFAIK, on the amazon cloud, you can create your own virtual server instances, and do what you like. On the google cloud, you must use python and their database system ( which isn't relational, MS are promising to deliver a relational DB on their cloud, but it's still vapourware at this point ).

'Cloud Computing' is the marketing term of the moment, despite lacking a formal definition

Cloud Computing: Very old idea, new name. With massive vendors starting to offer this very old idea as a service, the hosting game may change. The server game may change. I don't think it will affect the domaining game, other than being another keyword ( which as previously stated, has already been registered for most of this decade )

cloud computing is not just a new name for an old Biz. it is Going to change business in ways we cant even think about yet.

Before anyone could afford computer servers a company could "rent"space on a Big IMB mainframe. Guys used to make a tone of money selling this space.

As time went on computing got cheaper and there are oracle databases and free databases and free programs and Microsoft ect.

Now any business can have all the resources of any big company for a very small fraction of the price, no overhead , very little expertise ect.
