I believe only short and easy-to-remember domain names are sustainable, regardless of where in the world you live and which cultural background you come from.

Now that the Chinese domain market has become a hot topic, I myself want to understand this trend too. Is there any real meaning behind each domain name sold in China? Here, I'd like to share with you what I've found as I read the Chinese news everyday.

GZX.com
GZX can stand for 更自信 (even more self-confident) which can be used in many fields such as education, self-help, and even consumer products to raise your self image.

XLY.com
XLY can stand for 夏令营 (summer camp) or 新领域 (new field) which can be used in recreation and high-tech products.

These words from Rick Schwartz explain why I refrain from giving opinion on value of domains:

"And as far as valuations go, the ONLY valuation that counts is YOURS!"

Not totally sure if this article is good or me being 2 optimistic ? WeChat launches new shopping function that lets you shop on JD.com with just a few clicks “Now simply by entering consumer product related keywords into the search box at the top of the WeChat homepage or the search function in the “Discover” tab, top search results popping up are product pages JD.com.” The shopping function, however, works on clear and unambiguous keywords and but not queries or more complex phrases. According to a PingWest report, the shopping results didn’t appear when entering the query “which one is better, Mentholatum or NIVEA?” or the keywords “book on artificial intelligence.”
Hmmm owning the keyword registration is a powerful marketing tool would/will owning the keyword registration be an advantage in early stage AI search results

Kassey Lee - what do you think about the domain Khata888.com? Khata is supposed to be exact spelling chinese ceremonial scarf if I am researched correctly. Also triple 8's for prosper.

Any value?

Khata is not Pinyin and Baidu has not given me any insight into it. 888 is a number favored by domain investors, but as far as I can see, I have not come across any leading Chinese company using such pattern. Why such pattern is so popular remains as a myth to me. If you can find an end user in China, your domain will be very valuable. Therefore, do your research before acquiring any domain.

I am hoping that as it spreads into the West even more then my SinglesDay.cn will find a buyer, probably from China realizing that the domains will have to be in English other than Pinyin or the occassional Chinese character domain.

That Chinese companies don't use English brand+domain is just a myth. However, a set of names on both .com and .cn (e.g. SinglesDay.com + SinglesDay.cn as a set) will be most attractive to startups in China, imho.

Yes I know, have sold a few.:xf.smile:

I have SinglesDay.com.cn but the .com is a well established dating site.

Not exactly. This term is from Tibetan Buddhism. And unlike Wikipedia says, everybody (or pretty much every Tibetan lama i know) spells it like katak or katakh or something like this.

SoundAi demonstrates good domain strategy at low cost

The other day I read the news about a Chinese startup called SoundAi. As usual, I did a little bit of study and found the company interesting. It shows that you can go global on day one with a good domain strategy – and at low cost.

@Kassey Lee any Chinese meaning in this 4L triple premium? Using your A-Z chart it showed me something along the lines of Europe, Win, Win, Car?

Each letter can represent dozens or more of words, and all four of them must combine to form a meaningful phrase in Chinese, so it's not that simple.

So essentially it could have multiple meanings? Makes sense. I did some further research and it looks like there are quite a lot of possibilities for the ending 3 Letters YYC, but not too many for the first letter because it is a vowel, but since the vowel is at the beginning and isnt an I,V, A or U there is a chance it could work as an acronym. Let me know if I'm missing something, trying to learn as much as I can.

3Ls are quite straight forward, and you can use the Chinese IME to find meaningful phrases. Take YYC as an example. I have 游泳池 (swimming pool), 越野车 (off-road vehicle). 一英寸 (one inch), and many more. 4Ls are more challenging and O is tricky. However, I've found one: 欧元预测 (Euro currency forecast), but it does not feel like a brand.

I have not looked into it. I have not come across any use .co in corporate China. For example, in my study of 2016 Top 300 New Internet Companies, no .co was spotted. Details below:

Extension Count Share
.com 228 76%
.cn 47 16%
.cc 5 1%
.net 4 1%
Others 16 6%
Total 300 100%

Others include: me(3), tv(2), nr(1), kr(1), and unknown(7).

Therefore, I don't pay attention to this extension.

It was before approved, may be after approved in China in the future, a Chinese buyers will grow investment in .Co

As I understand, country extension domains have been bought and sold in China for years with no problem, but turning a domain into a website within China must obtain an ICP license, which can vary from region to region.

For example, well-known food delivery startup Ele.me was founded in 2008 (acquired by Alibaba this year) and used .me to obtain ICP license in Shanghai with no problem. Bike-sharing startup OFO was founded in Beijing in 2014 and use the Somalia extension OFO.so until it upgraded to OFO.com in 2016.

My GUESS is that the MIIT approval makes .co acceptable across all regions within China.
