Hello

If you are a person that would like to learn chess or you already play the game but you feel that you don't make any progress I am willing to help you.
I offer you inexpensive chess lessons easy to understand and learn, based on analysing our games. This means that you don't need to memorize boring variations or anything like that. This wouldn't help you much until you are titled player. The secret is to have general understanding of the game and to adopt thought process of strong player. You need to know that if you give the same chess position to weak player and strong player their thoughts will be completely different. I can help you to get to this level of chess understanding, that would improve your play significantly.

I play and study chess for nearly 10 years. I've played above 40 thousands blitz games (online) and I'm about 1800 ELO player (I have not official ranking).

The lessons may be conducted online or correspondence, but I prefer the latter.

No, I resigned 3 before first move, 1 was for a mouse error, then I switched to white, I resigned again to give you back white. So just 3 :)

Using the right to bump the topic, I decided to tell you an interesting thing about onespecific chess game...

The game I am talking about was played in the movie of Stanley Kubrick '2001: A space odyssey', between supercomputer HAL-9000 and astronaut Dr. Frank Poole. If you have seen the movie and you are interesting chess, you must remember the scene. Funny thing is that not many viewers know that in this scene one can find that there is something wrong with HAL-9000...
But this may be noticed only after close investigation.

First I have to mention that Stanley Kubrick was passionate about chess and strong player and that is why he put the chess scene in his film.
The game is not fictional, but a real game played in 1910 between A. Roesch and W. Schlage (you can find and watch this game on one of online chess bases available).

In the film we watch the game after Blackโ€™s 13th move. For describing moves there was used very old chess notation, so called Descriptive Notation.
Frank: Umm...anyway, Queen takes pawn. OK?
HAL: Bishop takes Knight's pawn.
Frank: Hmm, that's a good move. Er...Rook to King One.
HAL: I'm sorry, Frank. I think you missed it. Queen to Bishop Three. Bishop takes Queen. Knight takes Bishop. Mate.
Frank: Ah...Yeah, looks like you're right. I resign.
HAL: Thank you for a very enjoyable game.
Frank: Yeah. Thank you.

And here is an interesting moment, because computer was not accurate both with describing queen move (should be "Queen to bishop six") and counting moves needed to finish the game (it was a checkmate in four moves, not two(!); Poole could delay mate by playing three more moves.

The question is: was it Kubrick's mistake while writing the screenplay or he did it intentionally?

I thing that such a strong chess player and great director would not allow such a mistake. He probably wanted to show that HAL is not completely honest with crew members, or he makes mistakes. (very sophisticated way to do so). This was probably the first sign that there is something wrong happening to the computer...

What do you think?
