The French usually use the word référencement to mean SEO

As a French-speaking participant to this forum, I must unfortunately confirm that this name seems to be hopeless IMO. Too long anyway, especially for such a name construction, whatever the other issues. Even in .com, I wouldn't see any future for that name. Sorry!
But I would be curious to hear what the original German name was? maybe something shorter or clearer?

I believe it was Suchmaschinenoptimierung, which has the virtue of being both correct and used - although a bit of a mouthful.

A little bit long, but definitely better than the attempt in French. The good name in French would be plainly "referencement", as mentioned in another post. But you won't be surprised that it already exists in all major TLDs. I have not explored alternative TLDs, which may still offer opportunities provided one develops a website attracting traffic, and does not just park a domain and waits for buyers.
