Anyone know the best places to catch a .co.uk ?

A name I'm after expired a week ago... and I really need to try and secure it for work when it drops. I'm ok using Snapnames for .coms, just wondering if there's a better alternative that's more specifically for .co.uk's...

Many thanks,
A

Ok, for a start, By Expired you mean "Suspended".

First, Check to see that it isnt a Pre-Nom (Pre- Nominet) domain name. These names are SLOWLY but surely being brought back in to circulation.
See Here for more info --> http://www.nominet.org.uk/registrants/prenominet/

Secondly, .CO.UK domains are notiriously hard to get hold of. The competition is more fierce than that of .COM names. Unlike .COM names, .CO.UK names drop randomly... they are unpredictable. You could be waiting up to a year in some cases for .CO.UK names to finally drop. At which time they WILL (99.9% of the time) be snapped up by registrars that manages to get "tags" before nominet was around. People have set up systems, and there are LOADS, but they keep them private so that they can catch the names and keep them (And never use them, not even park them... grrr how annoying!).

If its half decent you can bet your life that the systems below wont catch the names for you:

http://www.123-reg.co.uk
http://www.dropcatcher.co.uk
http://www.snapnames.co.uk
http://www.pool.com

... All hopeless.

All of the people that are actually able to get the domains are behind Closed doors. Notorious ones being "CENTRESERVE", "BIG" "QUO-VADIS" and such like. You can even contact them and they won't reply.

It all comes down to Pleeding with the owners of these systems and paying them lots of cash to make it worth their time.

.CO.UKs are a vicious game.

Great info

Luke thanks for the great info. Sounds like you've lost a few to those behind those closed doors.

Rep added for this great post.

Luke, thanks for the great info--rep added. I have a feeling that there just might be a chance for this one before it's a two-word domain that there won't be much interest in. It was registered in 2004 so it's definitely not a prenominet name.

Maybe getting in touch with 123-reg would be a good idea?

Thanks!
-A.

It is unlikely that they will be able to make a special preference for you, if you have the cash, and you really really are commited to getting the name, then I would sign up everywhere for the highest chance and to cover your bases.

The problem is, if it's half decent, 1-3 words... it will most likely be snapped up buy the big guys simply Because they take so long to drop. It gives them an even greater chance of finding the good names and setting up their systems to snap them up.

Try with Pool.com
Worth A try I suppose but I've heard that they have a VERY poor sucess rate of catching .co.uk names.

Yes, I have missed out on many great dropping .CO.UK domains and Missed a few Pre-Nom names that If I had backordered would have given me more of a chance of getting it than I would without backordering. One of them was 'Kiss.co.uk'... I'm gutted because it I didnt even realise that they were going to let it re-circulate, I thought that they were still waiting for owner confirmation.

WHO WOULD LET KISS.CO.UK GO!!?? Ahhh

Good Luck non-the-less I hope you get some great .CO.UK's

- Luke :)
