Can domain tasters falsify WHO IS "creation date" records?

I checked a domain name with a registrar 4 different times today (yep, one should pull the trigger right away, but...) Each of the 4 times the result was "Available".

I just went to register it and now it says "Taken". Who is records claim an earlier registration date. Is it possible for domain tasters to fake the "creation date" to reduce suspicions?

Or did I just simply receive an error at 4 different times today when it said "available"?

The creation date is set by the registry (Verisign).
Check the whois carefully, there are creation date & expiration level both at registry and registrar level for .com/.net. They may differ.

Question:

When a domain has expired - drops - and is snatched by, say, Pool.com, or SnapNames - and, then is auctioned off - does that process create a new 'Creation date' for the domain?

I mean, say the domain was originally registered in 2001 - and then is dropped in 2008 - then, after the expired domain auction, does Whois for that domain show the 'Creation date' as 2008, instead of 2001?

If so, what's the best way to discover how 'old' that domain really is from original registration.

You are asking two different questions here. An expired domain that "drops" and is caught gets a new creation date as the previous registration fully lapsed. An expired domain that is auction before the drop never fully expires and does not get a new creation date. The current registration is renewed and the ownership transferred to the party that bought the expiring domain.
