Browser based ping

In order to show the benefits of a hosting company which has servers on fast connections in the UK (its intented client base) I would like a script that would allow the user to enter a URL and ping the server, pretty much exactly as you would do through command promt, except a (non savy) people-friendly version on a website.

It is important that the URL is pinged from the users computer, otherwise the exercise is pointless. :D Any suggestions?

Thanks Adam, unfortunatly it seems to ping from texas somewhere - though the hosting site does come through faster than one of its uk competitors who's servers are based in the states - the ping timed out for them.

Ah well it was a nice idea and thanks for looking :)

yep, but I assume that if I host it on our server that it will ping from our server, rather than from the users pc.

I wouldn't know where to start playing with it to try and change it, I'm not experianced in php.

but it would ping from the server yes but would still go down the same pipe so it would just be as fast?!

you wouldnt be able to do a ping from a user pc incase they are behind a router or firewall that doesnt allow ping requests and you wouldnt be able to get access to the ping exe file

the ping may actually even be slower if it was to work from there connection to the server if they are downloading

I appreciate that you have told me it is not really possible/practical to set up a ping from a users computer to the hosting company's server.

But there probably isn't a lot of point setting up a ping from the server to the server? Isn't it at least slightly dishonest for us show the speed of the servers by doing that?
