I thought it would be informative if some people wanted to share the biggest mistake they MADE. NOT the biggest mistake they didn't do. People wont learn from your mistake "I thought of facebook but never developed it".

What will be informative is if people just say a mistake they MADE.

I will go first..


I can say the biggest mistake I have MADE would be buying into the gTLD hype and registering 5 .asia domains.. I want to say that at the time I pre-ordered them they were like almost $200 a piece..

I secured 5... and let the 5 drop after the first 2 years...

It was a costly mistake as the $1000 could have been used elsewhere..

I will NEVER buy into the gTLD hype again..

Biggest domaining mistake: buying into .tel

Biggest "life" mistake: at 18, I went to the police because my family was harassing me and trying to keep me from leaving the great state of Iowa.

Big mistake: I ended up in a mental institution for two months.

But I did leave Iowa, anyway.

Not reading the fine print for new extension releases for a landrush buy! I paid low $xxx only to find they allow "multiple applications" for the same domain, which, of course, results in an auction for the domain between all the applicants for that domain. The auction winner gets it, and everyone else who paid the price and thought "domain available" meant it was going to be reserved for them, forfeits their "registration" payment.

This happened to me as well with .co.

I fought back, and challenged the registrar to show me where it stated in TOS that my $XXX wouldn't be returned to me.

They couldn't, so they refunded my fee, minus a $25 fee (which had been disclosed in TOS).

Sometimes you just have to make a little noise.

Never again, though, will I buy into a landrush deal.

Getting overextended and allowing domains to expire out of frustration. I've allowed a few excellent domains to drop. It is important to keep emotions out of buying, selling and renewing decisions. I am not that good at following my own advice, but I strive to improve.

On a side note, for the last 8 years or so I have been involved in a study in patience. Every year, I contact the owner of this one domain that sits unused. They have an outrageous amount listed on the domain. It has no commercial value, they cannot be getting click throughs, but it would be fun to own just because I like to tinker. I offer $250, and let them know that although I like the domain, I do not need it, and will never offer more. The offers go unreplied to.

Now, that fellow could acknowledge me. He could have sold the domain to me 8 years ago and converted the $250 into more domains. But no, he is waiting on that one fictitious customer he thinks will show someday and pay out the wazoo for a domain that has zero commercial value.

mistakes are nothing these are he lessons to learn,
the biggest mistake i consider of myself was done on april fool.
my friend told my other very close friend that i am dead. she was shocked and that day she was doing to home and she felt in accident and lost his one leg. i was so sorry but she never came back ....alas

I purchased CSSU.com for $5000. He got me good. I can't even get a good $500 for it on GoDaddy Auctions.

That's a nice domain but yeah you did overpay. Did you have a development idea in mind when you bought it?

I bought a Hp Probook 4530s laptop that was a faulty piece and it cost me a fortune to get it repaired. Tried calling the Hp service center, online chatted them, but them were soo anonymous regarding the guidance. a laptop that i bought after collecting my hard earned $550 took another $300 in BIOS repair that'd crash infinitely. Finally sold the piece for $195....

My biggest mistake was contributing more to DNF.com than NamePros, other than that, my biggest domaining mistake was parking at DomainSponsor and earning pennies when I could have been earning well over 8 times more elsewhere, so I found out later.... years later.

A mistake I've made was buying a domain based on Goog returns enclosed in quote marks. normally this gives a good indication of searches, like the keyword tool, but I didn't notice the small print that said it was searching for it's preferred phrase and not what I entered, which was in small print "Would you rather search for [my keywords]. Their substituted phrase was 500k returns; the search I wanted, it turns out, only had a few hundred returns.
