My favorite is www.afternic.com but I might be a little biased. :)

I think the most overlooked aspect of our service is the affiliate program. A small affiliate just earned $475 for doing nothing but having an affiliate link to Afternic. His link referred the buyer of a $9,500 domain name (pp.com).

There was a discussion recently in a chatroom amongst some serious domainers, and a public mention of this on another forum.

The key thing that was pointed out that hurt afternic, was The amount of unwanted or seriously overpriced domains. This has been worked around by other simialar sites, that do not have the resources nor built in advertising, that afternic has from the past, and present advertising. By implementing some sort of screening process, It was speculated that afternic would become more usefull to domain speculators, as well as produce more sales results. It currently is a good site, and a nice resource, if you know how to use it correctly, and learn the tricks to search out the gems hidden amongst the garbage names. But many domain speculators, still aren't using it for this simple reason. It is true that by doing so, it may piss a few people off, but if they are offering garbage for $100,000, are they really making you any money?

How have other similar sites worked around it?

We have a mechanism in place that should theoretically completely solve this problem: ranking. (Unfortunately, I have to say theoretically because we have not come up with the most effective ranking forumla yet.) Here is how it works. Every listing gets scored between 0 and 255. (We could increase the range if it helped.) The lower the number the better the listing. All lists are shown sorted by ranking. We use a lot of criteria: length, TLD, whether it contains dictionary words, and pricing.

Our current ranking does improve the list results dramatically, but there is still much work to do. We want to add word popularity (search frequency) to the formula next.

I'd be glad to disclose the formula we're using to get opinions on how to improve it, if there is any interest. It is basically an automated appraisal formula plus a pricing element. We could create a public domain ranking formula (maybe on another thread).

Thank you for your offer, Roger.
I'd be interested in seeing the (automated appraisal) formula, as well.
Appreciate your post. :)

I've had plenty of luck at http://nova-boards.com
When I had an offer of $6 here I got an offer of $10 there. :)
This is definitley good too, though.

http://nova-boards is full of teens who don't have much money to spend on a domain but if you go to them with a desirable personal domain name, you will get some offers.

I find however, that NamePros is more useful in selling domains than Nova is, not to put down Nova because I absolutely love Nova.

Here it is. (I'm writing it so that higher points mean higher value listing.)

All other things being equal, we want them to be sorted alphabetically, so we add 25 points for domains starting with a, 24 points for domains starting with b, etc.

One word base, add 30 points.

Two word base, add 20 points.

Next offer would meet reserve or asking, add 30 points.

Top level domain .com, add 60 points.

.net? add 24 points

.org? add 12 points

Add 35 minus length of domain to give more points for shorter domains.

If domain is parked, add points for type-in traffic: two points for every 1000 visits per month up to 40 pts.

Price is less than 100 * total of above points, add 30 points.

"Best offer" price is less than 100 * total of above points, add 20 points.

That's it. Version 1.0. I almost have to refuse to defend it because I know it needs a lot of improvement.

Three things come to mind:

1. increase the range so we can re-weight criteria, then re-weight it.
2. add word popularity info, and
3. add search popularity info

These three are a lot easier said than done.

I was wondering if someone could elaborate on "RJ's script" for a newbie, and how you use it to advertise domains on your site. I tried to search for it, but the search mechanism doesn't like short words like "RJ". :yell:

thankkkkssss...

Thanks, that's a beautiful site. Has it gotten you some sales?

I was wondering if RJ was a regular here (I'm new) and if he sold or made available his script somewhere. Looks like a nice script.
