In a few minutes at exactly 8 min after 8 pm, on the 8th day of month 8 of 2008, the greatest sports event in the world will begin.

The Chinese regard the number 8 as a lucky number. B-)

Let the games begin!

I only watched a bit of the opening ceremony, but it looked very good. I don't find sport interesting at all, but I like the Olympics because it shows that the nations of the world can compete together friendly without trying to kill each other.

Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics said; "The important thing is not to win, but to take part", I guess that's called the "Olympic Spirit" :)

WOW, did they just spend like.. the entire Olympic budget on the opening ceremony? :p

It was fantastic.

Also 5 hours long, maybe because this is the most number of countries to ever participate (204).

Hoping for a solid Canadian showing :) .

It will not surprise me that China wins these games in terms of medals (especially gold) closely followed by the US and Russia. After that there's a bunch of countries like Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, UK and Cuba that are very closely matched.

Did you notice how the athletes were sweating in the opening cerimony? It must be extremely humid. I don't think we will have a lot of records in the track and field.

Swiming, however could bring a lot of records because of Speedo's new controversial swimsuits.

I feel sorry for the marathon runners.

In 4 years time the games will be in London. After seeing this cerimony I'll bet the British must be scratching their heads and thinking. "good heavens, how the bloody hell are we going to beat that?"

Would have to agree that it was the best opening ceromony i have seen, it was inspiring to say the least. The lighting of the torch was out of this world, and to be able to keep it a secret how it was going to be done was great.

Just hope team GB can do well this year, good luck to all taking part :)
