The best advice I learned from someone (unfortunately I forget who first) long ago is to with each acquisition try to talk myself out of it, find something wrong with it. It is easy to be too positive based on just one aspect - oh it is aged, it has great automated appraisals, there is a ton of search volume, etc., that can cause us to overlook something negative.

Apart from read, read, read, try not to spend! (at least only spend a little in year one). It's so easy to buy a domain, it's not easy to sell one. I recommend taking time over learning how to value a domain. Without that skill it will be hard to know what is a good buy and what you should expect/hope to sell it for (both retail and wholesale).

Yes you are right. Learn first a lot on NP and later on you can do your own way. The failure I have made when I started is to register domains without an strategy. Learn first a lot on NP. Many people don't tell their strategies. Find your own way.

Welcome newbies!

1. Start buying domains for $5 plus reg fee on godaddy marketplace. Buy those domains, develop them with few pages, backlinks, and visitors and list them for sell on flippa, or namepros or any other place of your choice. Expect anywhere between $50-$200 for a decently developed domain or domain+website.
   
2. Buy generic, dictionary keyword, or Exact match domains ONLY in popular TLDs like .COM or .NET, or popular ccTLDs like .io, .uk, .eu, .cn or some new (meaningful) gTLDs like .online, .shop, .store
   
3. Hand-register exact match domains, or semi-exact match domains on new gTLDs like .xyz, .top, .club, .ooo, .etc if you find a promo. Don't waste $40 on reg price if you are not sure you'll find any potential buyer in a year or so.
   
4. Do not bid on domains in marketplace if you find there are no indexed pages in search engines like google, no backlinks, but the domain has thousands of visitors and ad revenue (as visitors/analytics can be spiked and faked using a bot and scripts)
5. Do not buy crap, meaningless words domains just because other 5 or 6 TLDs, ccTLDs, gTLDs have already registered. Remember, no one will buy them from you for more than $5 if you put it on sale if they are worthless, or not developed sites.
   
6. When your bank account get quite FAT, then aim to buy premium domains from reputed domainers here, and rest of the marketplaces around the web. But stick to .COM domains to be on safer side. Buy premiums in other gTLDs only if that's really premium domain: coffee.shop and don't buy coffee.autos (as it becomes meaningless premium domain)
7. Do not rely on automated domain value software, domain appraisal sites wholly when deciding price of selling/buying!. Take their price as suggestions/estimates and not the final price. Final price of any domain depends upon IT'S USE TO THE PROSPECTIVE BUYER. If I just want to throw an adsense site on "coffee.shop" domain, I will never pay a hefty price of $$$$$ or $$$$$$$. But if I am a serious coffee business that wants to develop a brand around "coffee.shop" then I'll certainly pay a premium price to acquire that domain!
8. Buy single or two words domains and avoid more than that.
9. Europeans love hyphenated domains.
10. Chinese love numeric domains (but check out the meaning in their region for numbers)
11. Buy domains with prefix like The, Get, My, i, e. There are many good sales in past for such domains in .COM, .NET, .CO, .ORG, and .INFO tlds.
    
12. Use domain promo (like $1 or $3 promos) only if you want to sell the domain within one-year. Many promos are for 1st year registrations and then you pay $35-$45 for renewal on many new gTLDs. Else don't get excited to buy it and save that $1 to add it to your bill and get decent .COM/.NET to flip/sale.
13. Lastly, as other members have stated, read and keep reading this forum to get ideas, learn from others experience/mistakes, you can also DM domainers (including me) here and they'll gladly help you or give suggestions if you need.

I would suggest that while there are many more than the following, this might be a starting list of what to learn first:

1. How to evaluate whether a name is in a sector that appeals to a significant number of businesses. Sources like OpenCorporates can help. Now not all domain sales are to businesses, but the majority are.
2. How to search whether similar names have sold previously. NameBio is your best source.
3. How popular is the term, and if multiple word the phrase. Using Google searches with and without quotation marks can help.
4. How to search for trademarks and know at least the basics of trademarks, status, codes, etc. and how UDRP works.
5. How to value a domain name. This is of course hard, but the more you read reported sales data, recognizing that those are the ones that sold and many in some cases rather similar names never sold!
6. How to size up the competition. Learn how to use Dofo to see what similar names are for sale and if at BIN the prices.
7. I think important to realize that there are different structures of domain names, and also different types. By structure I mean one word, two word, numeric, alphanumeric, acronym etc. By types, some names are matches to products or services, others are perhaps made up words or combinations for a new brand, etc.
8. Learn the basics of registration, transfer by push and auth code, setting DN records and DNS server settings, etc. The technical stuff.
9. Really evaluate the options for selling - look at the big marketplaces, the registrar marketplaces, the brandable places, services that make it easy to run your own marketplace etc. You probably will sell at more than one, but learn where to sell.
10. What do you want to achieve in domain investing? What is your risk tolerance? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses?
11. Be reflective and keep adjusting. At least monthly think what you have improved and done well and mistakes you made. Set goals of new things to try.
12. Tune out most of the noise, don't place too much emphasis on people that write 12 point lists , and simply be clear on your own path and be willing to work hard and accept that you will make some errors along the way, but only ever invest what you can afford to potentially lose. But hopefully you will not.
