Hello All,

One of my goals this year is to go have a cheap vacation by driving somewhere and camping on the beach for a week. I want to get away from computers, cell phones, electricity, etc. I plan on taking my car, a cooler, a tent/sleeping bag and a hammock. If anyone has done this or has some suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. It has to be at the beach because well I love the beach and being in Missouri I don't get to see it to often, I don't care about Gulf/East/West.

Wherever you end up, although my recommendation would be Key West, Florida, check with the local authorities first, whether camping outside of assigned areas is permitted. The last thing you want is to collect a dandy citation for violation of some city zoning laws.
Other than that, it's one hell of an idea. I'll have to consider that myself :)

Cheap and Free are two differnt things. You can camp for free out in the everglades at bear island, but it's rough out there, you'll get away from more than computers and phones, you'll also leave behind running water and bathrooms.

The keys have some nice spots to literally camp on the beach, but they are booked years in advance for the incredible spots. I mean where else can you stay on a peaceful shore in a tropic setting for $20 a night (I think)?

If you find a good spot let me know, I have a brand new tent sitting in my closet waiting to be tested. Good luck,

Myrtle Beach - go to the state park there.

Minus the campground area, it's natural. I basically grew up in Myrtle in the summers, and I love it. You can do the commerce thing and hit the shops or head north our south and see some pretty areas around Cherry Grove (north) or Georgetown (south).

I even went to the other link, and nothing about camping. There are hundreds of miles of open shore line down here, so there's gotta be a place to camp. The homeless people camp on the beach down here in Ft Lauderdale.
