A domain I've been eyeing, has invalid whois contact info listed for it. Two email addresses are listed and both are bad. Phone # is bad as well. He's had the domain for 3 years, and it expires in march 06. He has no website for it and it is not parked.

Should I just backorder it and hope he lets it expire? Or should I be pissed that I take great pains to keep valid whois data for my domains and this guy doesn't?

You might want to try sending a letter via certified USPS mail to the address listed on the whois info. By sending certified mail you are going to know if the person is at that address or not. You might want to add in signature confirmation with the letter as well.

If that address isn't legit, then there is a problem. I am not sure what the penalties are for bogus contact info, but I am sure someone could answer the specifics of that issues.

I wouldn't assume bad faith on the guy just yet. I know some businesses even have email addresses on their whois info so that they aren't spammed so heavily.

Hi, I would'nt would'nt let it drop - find out who the domain name is registered with and then place a backorder with the drop company that is partner to the register if possible. ie - network solutions > use snapnames

I would be tempted to drop the registrar an e-mail to see if they can help, after all you are supposed to keep any registration information up to date.

I ain't telling you guys the name :)

I thought about complaining but you know what? By the time it were acted on, IF it were acted on, the damn thing is due to expire anyway... Might as well wait.

Maybe if this guy does renew, and IF he still doesn't update his info, then I will try and take him down and get the name :alien:

Fair is fair, this guy needs to play by the rules... I do.

Did you try checking the whois history in whois.sc for record changes?

Did you try looking the person up in the white pages by city/state & name?

Just send a real letter to the address and wait and then snap it up when it drops. If you alert the owner, good chance he'll renew and charge you more.
