A quality brandable domain can stand on it's own merits, without any SEO/SEM manipulation.
Do backlinks help?
Sometimes, but not all the time. In some cases they hurt and devalue the domain.
For instance:
- High quality backlinks from major vertical niche brands, .gov and .edu sources can provide genuine value.
- Medium quality backlinks from known brands, but nothing major can help with a little value.
- Poor quality backlinks from blogs, directories, bookmark sites, forum sigs, link-lists, etc. provide little to no value. Additionally, these types of backlinks can actually pass negative value to a domain they link to.
- If the page linking to the domain is blacklisted in search engines linking to a non-blacklisted page
- If the page linking to the domain is adult linking to a non-adult page
- If the page linking to the domain contains malware linking to a non-malware page
- If the page linking to the domain was reported for spam linking to a non-spam page
- If the page linking to the domain is in a scam alert list linking to a non-scam page
- If the page linking to the domain was flagged for keyword stuffing or other manipulative violations
The list goes on, but that's the general idea.
Not only will a mass blackhat SEO/SEM backlink campaign pass little to no value, it's association to the domain they are linking to can potentially contribute to the domains own spam score.
A spam score is leveraged by good acquisition teams to devalue a domain, since a new start up may need to clean it up prior to launching a trusted and authoritative brand on it.
A new start up is looking for clean and strong launch, with trust at the forefront of the grand opening. If a domain has a spam score, flagged a spammy, in a scam database, or on an email block list, it makes it very hard for a new start up to achieve a successful launch.
Helpful information about spam scores:
I'll stop there, there's just too much to cover on this topic.
In short:
- A great brandable domain doesn't need any backlinks
- An established brandable domain with organic and high quality backlinks can command a higher value
- A brandable domain someone used blackhat SEO/SEM campaigns to manipulate the ranking data with poor backlinks with see low to no added value and will potentially be devalued or penalized for the unethical practices.
I would suggest just focusing on organic quality and not ways to manipulate data, which can backfire and blow up in someones face,
