Mmh...make good websites i suppose ;)
And "spread" them (with moderation, not in a spammy way) on most social networks like facebook, twitter, delicious etc. This is a good start imho.

Social networks are better for direct traffic, because their backlinks are nofollow.
Best things to do: add your site you some very good, manually approval directories, post and forums with your site in the signature and comment on blogs. BUT, do NOT spam...it will help you a lot if you will provide good content

There are several social networks with dofollow backlinks...and yes, i agree with digital29, especially with the second part.

I use places such as: Using forums, submitting articles to the different directories, you can make Google and Yahoo groups and put link to your site there as well. Hope this helps a little.

The best way to get backlink to your websites are, article submissions, pr submissions, blog commenting, social bookmarking, join discussions, and use and start linkbuilding compaign.

first you need to choose your color , white/grey or black :)
i would not go with black methods , they are just spammy and does not work any more like it used to be when google did not knew how to handle it .

there is the way that most people do it - article submission , blog commenting, social bookmarking etc etc etc

if you really want to build an empire so the best way imo to get links is to make friends :)
and what do i mean in that ? well its like real life actually , if "john" have a wine store and he have many friends in that niche - so he will also going to get lots of orders because those friends will "link" his store saying "yeah john is a good guy and have great wine" and will send new customers to his store all the time .

its the same on the online world , what is your site about ? xbox games ? plunge yourself inside that niche , make friends on forums , send emails to blog owners , post on a regular basis on xbox blogs , then people will gladly link to you and thats the real purpose of linking - one web site vouching for another

Ya, that is the best start on how you can to backlink to your website.

I also heard that if you have the more backlink, it can actually helps on your Google Adwords and Google Search Engine.

I have a concern regarding willingness of people to place your links at other people website, most of the time they will ask favor in return to place their links at your ends also which they call this method as exchange links.

Unless the person is your customer and they are a fans for your company then I believe more than willing to do it for you.

oh man, i used to be in the same boat hardly 3 weeks ago. Backlinks are a major pain the butt for me. Here is what I have found so far

You can get back links by

1) posting comments on DoFollow blogs that are in your genre
2) writing articles ( which is a whole other "industry" to research
3) buying links
4) using a link building service
5) using social bookmarking sites
6) classified ads
7) Squidoo, Hubpages
8) Linkwheeling
9) Forum postings
10) Begging

This is probably the hardest part about the web development business (at lease so far in my experience)

To learn, join forums like this one. I have joined many forums but NamePros has treated me the best. Everyone here is super friendly and there is a lot your can learn.

Good luck
