I've been speaking to many people lately about autism. My wife and I have been blessed with a beautiful, healthy boy who is now 10 weeks old, and want to do everything we can to keep him healthy.

There have been many theories about if certain things cause autism (environmental factors, vaccines, genetics etc.) - but regardless, it is a condition that is affecting 1-2 children per 1,000.

Wikipedia has a good compilation of material on Autism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism) to help give you a basic understanding of the condition. The best way to learn about it is to speak to a parent who has a child with Autism.

I've come to really have a heart for these kids, because it's a condition that's not understood by most of society. I thought I'd just start this thread to encourage you all - if you have some extra NP$, buy an Autism ribbon (the one that has the puzzle pieces) which will benefit the Autism Society of America.

I know that we have an international community, but we can be sure that moving towards a cure whether in America, Russia, Australia, or Kenya will benefit everyone.

I'll start a thread like this every once in a while to bring some attention to some of the charity ribbons that we have available on NamePros. I think it's a pretty awesome program that the Administrators have started, which allows us to share some of our prosperity with causes that we believe in.

Have a great week, everyone! :)

I already did it's for my son who is 16 years old autistic started special schooling since 2.5 years old, autism majority starts at 2.5 years old if person is autism, the pediatrician needs to examine the child and diagnose it accurately to suggest correct special schooling methods.

occupational and physical therapy combined with academic tutoring brings results.

thanks for the thread.

here's my son photo

Autism and aspergers are greatly misunderstood conditions. I think a cure is a long way off, as it is for many neurological conditions and at the moment the concentration needs to be on managing the condition and giving the child the best opportunities and quality of life possible.

It is society thats needs to change to accomodate individuals with special needs and disabilities, not the individual that needs to change to fit in.

I will buy a ribbon when I get some spare np$ :)

Yes, please support Autism by purchasing a NP ribbon. You can also make a donation to The company i work for, http://www.sunnyfield.com.au/, which looks after children and adults with Autism and other disabilities.

Thanks for caring.

This is a subject close to my heart, I spent 2 years working with Adults and children with autism in New York State 14 years ago, I also have close links with people who work and have children with autism, but more importantly my son has a very mild form of autism.

Thanks GF for bringing this subject to the forefront today :)

Congrats on the new addition to your family GF.

I have a 5 month old boy and this kind stuff that I never paid attention to I now soak up like a sponge.

The rise in autism is alarming - it's estimated to be 1 case per 150 children. With the current vaccination schedule recommending at least 30+ something shots it makes you wonder. In the 1970s, the vaccination schedule was only 10 shots and we haven't seen an outbreak of any of the diseases. Why the need to dramatically increase the number of shots?

IMO, Wikipedia should be considered a starting point for research for topics such as autism, SIDS and the like, as any view that isn't directly in line with "mainstream sources" will be considered a "fringe view". Even though the "fringe view" may hold truth, it will get rejected by Wikipedia.

GenerationRescue.org is a good site for autism research.

^^ Thank you, NameCharger! Also, what you said is so true. "Mainstream" sources automatically outweigh "fringe sources" even though there are a lot of important ideas that non-mainstream sources have to add to the discussion.

IMHO, we should be looking at ALL sources for information right now!

My wife and I have an autistic grandson.
He is 18 now.
Ever since the first time I met him (my wife's grandson, but hey, all the grandkids are mine!) 10 years ago, he has been a joy.

Anyways, here is a picture of him:

This news story came out a couple weeks ago linking autism to rainfall: http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/11/study-links-rai.html
Someone commented on that page "There is also a correlation between ice cream and drowning (more people eat ice cream in the summer when more people are swimming hence the two numbers are higher)"

IMO, that "study" is a waste of $$$ and grasping of straws for vaccine manufacturers who are in a blatant state of denial.
