The authorization code is used when you transfer domains between registrars. It's needed to initiate a transfer, however you still need to approve the transfer for it to take place. An approval request is sent to the email on file for the domain and you need to approve it.
So technically someone can initiate a transfer if they know the authorization code but unless you approve it from the link sent to your email the transfer can't be completed.

I'm not an expert though, I'm sure someone who knows better will come along to help you out.

if somehow someone knew the auth code, then yes they could take your domain (getting the other necessary info shouldn't be that difficult). you can block transfers of your domain to other registrars by locking it.

Authorization Code or "Secret Code" is associated with your domain name and is accessible from within your control panel where your name is registered. To be able to get to this code implies that you have access to the domain name's control panel.

In other words, it implies that you know the username and password to the domain name's control panel and therefore all of its contents, including whatever personal information that is stored in it.

Thanks, I understand more now. May I ask one more question? I sold one domain on Sedo and they asked me my Authorization Code of my domain name. Is it normal ?

yes it is normal, because sedo will have to provide the auth. code to the buyer so he can transfer it into his account.

I think it's safe to say that Sedo is a reputable company to use for domain sales and generally beneficial to both parties.
As meek said, they need the auth code to allow the buyer to "pull" the domain from the transaction.

Thanks guys. This is the first time they asked me for an auth. code, so just a little worry . :)

Just for future refernce be very careful with the Authorization Code. One of the posters above mentioned that someone can have your code but you will get an email to approve the transfer. I just sold one of my NSFW sites for x,xxx, and I had purchased my domain name as a newbie from yahoo a reseller for Melbourne IT.

Yahoo is very difficult to deal with when it comes to domain transfers so I provided the Auth Code to buyer after he put money in Escrow.com to make the transfer easier. He went ahead and requested the domain name but used a company name instead of his own. I NEVER received an email from Yahoo or Melbourne, and Escrow would not release the funds because it was not his personal name but a company name.

Needless to say it was a terrible hassle and almost lost my site and the money because the guy dissapeared after that. I got lucky dotn want to go into the details but def got lucky to recover the money.

Just be careful for future reference if you are ever selling site or name.
