Ok, I bought a Verbatim 128 mb Flash Drive

I went to my sister's apartment, made a design, and dragged it over to this. When I put it in the USB drive, a window pops up, viola, I'm in. No problems, my sister's computer is EXACTLY the same as mine at home. I get home, put it in, and I can't find where I should access it!!!

I have gone to the device manager numerous times, it shows up under USB Drives as "unknown device" and I cannot for the life of me find a way to access this drive and the files!!!

I have updated driver, installed new hardware, roll-back driver, d/l and installed the driver software for the device, disabled/enabled the device, uninstalled/installed, done everything I can do to it from the device manager, all to no avail!

Then, as a desperate measure, we've emailed the company's tech support, and they say to re-format it and everything will work. The only problem is I can't find a way to get to the drive from anywhere but the device manager, and I don't think I can reformat from there....

I fall down on my knees begging for help, someone, please!

The OS type would be nice,

Check your USB port isnt at fault buy using some other USB device.

When uninstalling make sure everything is gone.. reboot, and the USB is back to normal on your device manager.

Do a "safe install" turn off the system, insert USB drive.. turn back on.. windows should autodetect the drive and request drivers.. then find the drivers using the browse button. reboot afterwards and then check device manager..

Yes i know you spent your entire life rebooting windows!

Let us know how you get on, its mostlikely some stupid niggle problem with the driver + windows locking the driver.

It's Windows XP Home Edition, Professional Edition, and Windows ME (I've tried it on 3 computers, all the same "unknown device")

Blackpanther, I've tried all that, and even downloaded the specified driver from Verbatim's website, all to no avail!

If they say re-formatting will work, then that's great, I just need to find some way to actually get to the icon "removable drive" or whatever to reformat it, it's not in My Computer!

Thanks for all your help...:)

Did it work on your sisters computer ? try reformating it on her computer then..

You could also try having a go at this http://www.bootdisk.com/usb.htm

usb for dos, then boot to a command prompt in Windows ME/XP (xp dont really have a dos but should still work) if you get it you can reformat it there....

I cant think of anything else, if they say re-format it then this must be a common problem with thier devices.. so there must be a way of formating it..

If you still dont get it, reply to thier email and ask them how your ment to format it, give them your OS type.

right try this

plonk the drive in the xp box (proffesional would be nice) then try this

1. enter control pannel
2. go to classic view if not already in it
3. go to administrative tools
4. computer managment
5. select the disk managment folder
6. you should see the drive connected there if it has installed the drives
7. right click it click
8. then click change drive letters and paths
9. select something compltely random (eg z)
10. ok everything go to my computer if it has worked IT SHOULD appear in my computer

if it doesnt repeat it until step 8 and click format (you will loose the data on the stick!!)

if that doesnt work send it back to the shop

Funny thing is, I actually tried this before you posted it, but it doesn't show up in the disk management folder :-/
