The problem with Paypal clones (if this is one), is that people will think they have the financial backing that Paypal does, which I assume most do not.

This is true, you have to consider the company that is running the site. In all actuality, anyone with $100, a domain name and web hosting can start their own Payment Service using the same scripts as FleetPay. See http://www.paymentsystempro.com/
The main use for alternate payment processors is to cover niches that PayPal doesn't, like accepting payments from certain countries, gambling, adult related, mlm, etc.
