amazon.com - interesting one-word brandable domain; many people already recognize the word; $25 wholesale, low $xxx end-user

ebay.com - sorry, reg fee; what's an electronic bay anyway?

yahoo.com - yahoo's are ignorant, cheap folks, right? reg fee

Interesting thread, Van. But this belongs in Domain Discussions. Moving it ... :)

I agree...neat thread topic.

Amazon.com: $125+ wholesale, $750+ end-user.
eBay.com: $25+ wholesale, $75+ end-user.
Yahoo.com: $75+ wholesale, $350+ end-user.

I believe ebay originally stood for the old company name east bay.

Amazon.com - $50 +/-

Ebay.com - Reg.Fee - $30. I don't like 'e' type domains! Bay is a nice short word. Now, I just think of it as one word, I don't really think of it as 'e' and 'bay'.

Yahoo.com - $100 + Great one word name.

:D

But you didn't really miss it. Their current value are a result of millions of dollars spent on building the brands. Had you registered ebay.com before the company came to life, they would have picked some other made-up name and spent their marketing dollars on that; you'd still have ebay.com in your portfolio today, worthless and unappreciated.

Apart from generic and quickly marketable names like 'loans' or 'drugs', it's the brand-building which adds value to any domain name. Yahoo and Google are perfect examples. Any dn for sale at NP can worth alike if developed & built like Yahoo or Google.
There are numerous generic names which are being used just to have traffic due to limited resources of registrants to build a brand.
