what makes up a good network of sites?

what would be a good marketing tool for creating a network and brining multiple sites into one...

im toying with the idea, but am unsure at this point if its worth it, and the value i would be adding, if any, to my existing sites

you can have a few extra backlinks. But I am not sure how much more benefit, since you could just have one domain with many pages.

I think a network of sites works very well when they are slightly different but related to each other.
For example if you had a site dedicated to skiing equipment then you could have another about travel, another about insurance ( especially if you ski like me etc.

By making them all slightly different you will be able to 'trap' more visitors.
