As someone new to this, it didn't take long to figure out you can sell your domains at some place like Sedo or Afternic, but what I am wondering about is active marketing, ie unsolicited contact with an end user.

Have any of you had domains that you thought would be a great fit for some pre-existing company and contacted them in regards to your domain? If so, how did you do it and what were your results? Any good sales using this technique?

Just don't approach them with anything that might infringe on their trademark. You might get hit with lawsuit rather than an six-figure offer;)

Well, I am sure it helps give you the upper hand in initial negotiations, but there are a TON of end-users that know nothing about domains or how they are acquired, so if they see it is already registered, they just move along.

I am very new to this (involved less than 1 week), but it would seem if you are looking to sell to another domainer, you can just sit back, park and wait, but end-users probably need to be "sold" just like with most other products.

If you can convince them of the need to own the domain, you are in control, especially if they have competitors that they think might be interested.

I have yet to put this to the test since I am currently just working on building a portfolio that I think I can take to end-users. I think this is probably more work, but should result in much higher payoffs as well.

Yes...I am definitely not interested in getting involved with any of that.
