Yes, you may see those kinds of sales from time to time, but they are not the norm. Trust me, when I bought my first batch of domains, I bought a bunch of those 3 character domains thinking they were rare. I was wrong. They are very abundant. Go to any registrar and randomly type in a mix of 3 characters, you'll see that many of them are still available for hand registration. If you find a 3 character .COM, that's a different story.
