Hello, Well since I randomly pop-up on these forums every so often, I was wondering how many people here are fellow 3D artists? If you don't know what that is you probably are not a 3D artist LOL... BTW: I do not mean 3D artists as in making 3d effects in Photoshop GIMP etc etc... And if you have used a 3d program such as GMAX 3DS MAX Blender etc etc which one do you prefer?

I've been really interested in doing some 3D work. I've used Maya, 3dsmax, and Gmax. I liked Gmax as it was pretty easy to pick up with the tutorials that came with it. Maya was about the same... but the learner's edition had a watermark I didn't like messing with. 3dsmax is probably the best one, but I haven't been able to pick it up at all. Haven't found a tutorial that goes through everything like I want. Most tutorials are either limited, or are too basic. There's another modeling program I used called Rhino, but it has limited functionality. I think it's free though, which is a plus. Been too long since I messed with Blender to judge it. Tried messing with it back in the day when warcraft 3 first came out. Haven't actually modeled anything all the way through because I don't have a lot of training, but got the urge to learn.

I have tried most of these programs but for some reason I just cannot get the hang of making anything good.. lol

I actually went to school majoring in animation - I particularly love character animation. We worked mostly in Maya, but it is definitely lacking for modeling purposes. I love Mudbox! I've tried blender as an option since I don't do animation professionally and couldn't justify the left kidney and right arm it costs, but I didn't care for it.

I wish I had more time for 3D stuff... have a completed storyboard and animatic for a short film I wrote.

Although I don't specifically do 3D artwork, I try to get a 3D effect using gradient fills and slightly transparent layers to give a shine effect.

i.e. http://www.ifreelance.com/share/providers/11239/samples/28720.swf?v=1

That image was drawn entirely using the graphics tools in flash MX 2004. I got bored and never completed the back wheel properly and the front wheel is a bit mishaped.

Yes, as I said the other day.. your work is AMAZING! Better 3D effect than I could ever get in a 3D program lol
