Where are they registered and what's the renewal fee?

Renewal fees are €39 (approx 50U$) per year

transfer is easy. Just register with ISNIC as an admin. No restrictions. Any foreigner can do. Having your admin id the domain can be transferred.

Some numbers & maths to ponder about:

In July 2012 the world wide DNS host count was more than 900 million. In the last 6 years the amount of domain registrations more than doubled with the tendency to double again in less amount of time.

On the other side there are only 242 ccTLD, which would theoretically allow 242*26*26=163'592 2-letter domains.
But in reality most registries have restrictions or require a minimum of 3 letters and in beginning 2013 there are only around 20-25 ccTLD's, that allow 2-letter domains.

Let's assume 20 NIC's and leaving aside numbers.
Then there are 20*26*26 = 13'520 possible names. Approx. 90% are already taken and only 1'350 names remain.
For a 2-letter domain with one vowel there are only 20*5*26 = 2600 possible names. Approx. 90% are already taken and only 260 names remain.
And because there is in the portfolio http://ue.is - the math is 5*5*26 = 650 names possibilities. Approx. 90% are already taken and only 65 names remain. An absolute rarity!

Set finally these numbers in relation to approx. 1billion DNS host counts and the result is, that these 2-letter domains are in a range of 0.0001% (!) availability.
