I felt it necessary, considering the domain community is split on .SI adoption, to create a thread to discuss reasons .SI is NOT a good extension because there are too many threads already discussing the positives.

I have started compiling a list of reasons .SI sucks, which I will add onto as time goes on:

1. If Superintelligence becomes a thing then domains will become useless.
2. Other extensions with good letters are not popular
3. Most sales are investors
4. Recursive is forwarding recursive.si to recursive.com
5. Recursive bought it for brand protection not because of Superintelligence
6. It's expensive (costs $13/year)
7. .SI is for Slovenia
8. Successful domain investors like Domain Shane and Bmug say it's no good
9. SI almost sounds like 4 in Chinese
10. David Day sold one for profit

Feel free to add your own reasons why .SI sucks in the comments.

You should follow your <3 not successful investors.

Imo.

I am pretty sure I never even said the domain extension was "no good".

I made a few valid counterpoints, you know like end users will determine the future of the extension...and you got all upset for some reason.

The amount of spammy .SI threads on the forum is just annoying. There are a handful of people starting very similar threads over and over.

I voted "Maybe". As I said earlier, end users will decide. Not domain investors.

For every winner like .AI, there are many other extensions that domain investors piled into and flopped. Time will tell.

.si sucks because si is yes in Spanish

.si sucks because superintelligence is elitist and not all inclusive of diversity and those with disabilities

.si sucks because it is not already at a stage that it should be compared to what I think it should be therefore there is no future for it

.si sucks because nothing happened in some other context to another extension so there is no reason to think it would be different this time

.si sucks because I feel really strongly about it

the only reason .si doesn't suck is because I sold one for profit. that's the only reason. other than that, it's pretty bad

Yeah that definitely sucks, your reason has been added to #10 on the list.

That fact .SI is not as popular as .AI is reason enough to avoid it.

But add in that SI means Yes in Spanish/Italian 🤮

Might as well be called .crap, would probably fare better.

Btw, I wanted to add those reasons to the list but I can no longer edit the original post.

The updated list:

1. Not as popular as .AI
2. If Superintelligence becomes a thing then domains will become useless.
3. Other extensions with good letters are not popular
4. Means "Yes" in Spanish/Italian
5. Most sales are investors
6. Recursive is forwarding recursive.si to recursive.com

12. David Day sold one for profit

Devil's advocate moment: wtf does xyz rhyme with?

.ai is the biggest domain boom ever other than the start. To think suddenly everyone is going to have this need to switch from .ai to .si is actually pretty insane. The Ai term will continue to evolve as the technology progresses, just as it already has for the past half a decade. Si at best will be a specialty jargon keyword that could fetch some decent sales, but nothing worth gushing over or going on a hand reg spree for.

May we shift the conversation from the pros and cons of .si to where our limited capital is best allocated?

Speculation is best reserved for deep pockets.

Does anyone actually think that or is it a strawman?

Does anyone actually think that or is it a strawman?

That's certainly what the OP in the thread that spawned this thread seemed to be suggesting in more than one post:

  • All big techs are racing forward to SuperIntelligence era ?
  • AI ⟶ AGI ⟶ SI
    .ai artificial intelligence
    .si super intelligence
  • All the roads lead to SuperIntelligence ultimately (SI) ?

And just like the .ai boom (2017–2020) defined a generation, the coming SuperIntelligence wave (2027–2030) may be the massive inflection point that reshapes the entire technology landscape.

That's certainly what the OP in the thread that spawned this thread seemed to be suggesting in more than one post:
strawman and black or white fallacy.

.si doesn't need .ai to fail or anything of the sort. Nor is it neccessary for superintelligence even to become ubiquitous to the same extent as AI. All it needs is some interest and relevance, which already there is with small momentum.

If someone said circa Y2K, phone calls via telecoms are legacy tech and the future is free calls via VOIP — that would have been a reasonable prediction. And yet none of that coming to pass was a smite at the phone number and it's continued relevance. Some of you really struggle with this.

I made no comment on either of those things.

You asked whether anyone really thought that .si would replace .ai and I showed you posts/quotes where @SteveNgo suggested exactly that...

I do not agree and saw nothing of the sort.

Very good, I must have been imagining that the OP said "reshapes the entire technology landscape" - what a boring world it would be if we all agreed on everything. :xf.grin:

It is kind of simple isn't it? You conflated his remarks regarding superintelligence as evidence for OP saying everyone is going to have this need to switch from .ai to .si
