$100 laptops next year

They say it won't be available in stores, but once these roll out I imagine consumers everywhere will start demanding it, so if $100 Laptops Inc. won't supply it, someone else will.

One important sidenote to this move is that the laptops will be loaded with linux and other opensource. Priced as they are, there's no way to fit in $500+ worth of Microsoft software, unless MS drops the Windows/Office price to like a dollar each and voluntarily trims the fat off of Windows and Office. So with millions of mostly young people lugging around linux laptops, we could finally see opensource achieve critical mass.

Time to sell Microsoft shares! :hehe:

Sounds pretty, cool but I think a $500 laptop project would be just as successful in the US Market

Probably not $100 laptops but we do have laptops at work that cost no more than $700...makes you wonder what the prices will be like in a year from now

The laptop looks like junk to me. I'd rather pay $1K and get something good. Then again, this is for educational use. As a tool for students, it makes for an awesome calculator.

Many believe that we're past the point where the raw computing power of the average computer is more than enough for most people. The average person just runs some basic word processing, internet browsing, and email; sometimes spreadsheets and presentations. Maybe one or two specialized programs like tax software. At any rate, for these sort of apps, even the Pentium 3 was more than adequate. Sure, there will still be a market for >$1K laptops, but its bound to be a very thin slice of the overall market, mostly just computer professionals and senior management.

Also, there are already plans for better ones:

wow thats cool its a big diffrence from the 700GBP laptop I got which is about $1300+ and thats quite cheap for a laptop here in the UK. $100 you just cant go wrong with that sort of money! great idea

sounds good 256 ram with 1gig flash memory instead of harddisk and a wireless LAN connection The machines will automatically connect with others, forming a mesh network to support communications and also Internet connection sharing and they'll run software including the Skype voice-over-IP application,

Its not that cheap for a laptop here. PC world have some god deals on. Like 256mb ddr ram 128 radeon gfx card 100gb hd 3.2 athlon processor for £499 not bad!

Who needs a 1 million gb hard drive anyways lol

Any members remember 1gig parties? Some friend would get a 1g HDD (HUGE MAN, HUGE) and the festivities (sodas and chips) would begin.
Or the first time you sat in front of a 386... or a 486.... (OMG, Blazing)
How about that first 4mb AGP card.... (look, you can see faces)
Voodo PCI G accelerators... twins, inter-connected adding 4 extra mb's.
8 mb's of RAM.... d00d, you'll NEVER use all that.

as of 1995, there was more computing power in the avg vehicle sold than in the Apollo Space Programs entirety.

Only thing is, it'll be using a projector instead of a normal screen (they can't get LCD displays AND keep the price low)... what's that supposed to mean? A projector that projects the image on a nearby wall? Or on a dark plate placed where the normal display would be? Anyone have any idea about this?
