Mod rewrite help needed

Hey guys,

I am working on a site of mine and need help with some mod rewrite rules. I need two different rules.

One will be for:
http://www.domain.com/category.php?id=1&page=2 or something to that effect to be
http://www.domain.com/category/category-name/page2

The other one I need is:
http://www.domain.com/view.php?id=23 or something to that effect to be
http://www.domain.com/view/title-name

I appreciate any insight.

This would be difficult with mod_rewrite since you don't have a 1 to 1 mapping between the original and rewritten URLs. You might need to use a PHP script instead of (or in conjunction with) mod_rewrite to do the mapping (e.g. from category-name to id)

Could I do convert
http://www.domain.com/category.php?id=title-goes-here&page=2
to the style that I want?

If you can modify the category.php and vide.php scripts to take a category name or a title instead of an id, then you might try the following:

RewriteRule ^category/([^/]+)/page([0-9]+)$  category.php?name=$1&page=$2 [L]
RewriteRule ^view/([^/]+)$ view.php?title=$1 [L]

You could use a text file to map category names to ID's
Have a look at the RewriteMap directive with mod_rewrite
Abbreviate URLs with mod_rewrite - url abbreviation uri mod rewrite

The view one worked, but the category one did not work. It says page not found.

I can't see anything wrong with the rewrite rule. Check:

1. You are typing the correct URL, e.g. try http://www.domain.com/category/category-name/page2
2. Try accessing http://www.domain.com/category.php?name=category-name&page=2 to prove that the category.php script is working

Okay, it works now. But it bugs out if I don't have /page1. Can I have it default to being page1 if a page isn't inputted?
