The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
You buy and wait for offers or BIN
You buy and do targeted outbound
You buy and try an auction
You buy and try and flip wholesale
You buy and park your domain for PPC
You buy and develop a site
You reg names when you start and end up dropping most of them after 1 year

The above are your options and there are many threads on here about these subjects

Could be more options...

Good suggestions by @NickB. Here are a few more:

Spend a lot of time reading through NamePros threads
Pick a niche market and research it
Teach yourself a new technical skill
Listen to domaining podcasts such as DomainNameWire, DomainSherpa, etc.
Develop or expand one of your social media profiles

The idea is to keep learning and trying different things -- all within reason, of course.

Whether you know this or not, you're officially a business owner...a sole proprietor in the retail sector selling virtual goods. Learn the fundamentals of business and sales before anything else. Without that solid foundation, it will take you MUCH longer to grasp the intricacies of domaining. That education will cost you a lot of time on youtube, but it will be time well spent. One of the main reasons it takes a lot of newbies so long to sell their first domain is because they have no business acumen.

Chances are your domains are crappy by veteran domainers' standards. Don't try and sell them where they sell theirs. They will bury you alive. Trying to sell your domains at the major marketplaces is the equivalent of selling your obscure brand cola drink in Walmart right next to Pepsi and Coke. It's very likely nobody will touch your product. Now put that very same crappy cola in a vending machine in an office building and watch what happens on an icy rainy day that nobody wants to wade through puddles of water just for a can of Coke.

Remember this: the vast majority of domain end users are small startups. Most of them don't yet know about domain marketplaces. You need to get your domains in front of them before they discover the marketplaces. Your domain name does not have to be premium to sell. It just has to be better than what they would have hand registered had you not shown them yours.

This is a great idea. Are there any presenters you especially recommend?

Start with this: The Psychology of Selling by Brian Tracy.
Brian Tracy has a ton of audiobooks on youtube. Listen to all of them.

What does every sensible person do before they start a business in any field? Research, yes? You want to get your industry related domain name in front of them before they even register a business name. Most people starting a business don't know about brandable/domain marketplaces. Majority of the people who go to places like Sedo and Dan to shop for domains are very seasoned domain investors. You also have a lot of traffic from domainers trying to sell their inventory. You will not see the light of day trying to compete with that.

Pick a niche. Assuming that you pick real estate, you want to hang out in a real estate forum and establish yourself as the authority person for domain names. With the slightly more experience you have in domains than they have, majority of the domains you register will be better than what they otherwise would have hand registered themselves. What you want to do is create a situation where your competition isn't too fierce. You will become the vending machine in the office building and you will be selling your 'crappy' domains for good prices sooner than you know it. You can do this with just about any niche outside the domain industry.

Thank you @BrandAptly.com. I'm glad to know there's an alternative to listing on the major marketplaces and waiting ... forever and ever.

Real food for thought. Thank you..

Glad to be reading this, I am wondering what the names of the alternative market places we should be selling on that the small start-ups will see.].

Who do you use for the ads?
I use Ad network. I can't post the link here. It contains affiliate code. Not allowed.
PM me if you need the link.

Don't nurse the wrong impression that you can seriously monetize one, undeveloped domain, without content. See below for screenshot for 1 month earnings /10 domains (including a niche blog with few articles). Just about $4. It could have been more than doubled, with video ads.

So, you should be thinking of tens, hundreds, thousands domains - if you want handsome income.
And not all domains/websites can be monetized with ads. Traffic is paramount. So, here are the steps to follow:

1. Register with the ad network. You must indicate your domain portfolio website, will your domains redirecting to the site.
2. Wait a couple of days for review and approval.
3. Select the type of Ads you'll like to display on the domains ( banners, video, text etc. There're 15 types in all.).
4. Get the code(s) and insert on the header/footer part of your website and/or domain landing pages. You insert the codes once. You can still have offer/BIN form on the domains if you're selling them.
The standard banner ads are not intrusive and you still retain your brand identity. Video ads fetch more, but can be intrusive.

how do you work on driving traffic to those?
You can drive traffic to the domains/portfolio by using the same network to advertise with part of your earnings. You can also become an affiliate and earn extra. Just an option.
