A domain I want is now "Pending Delete". The original owner had it registered with Godaddy. I placed a Godaddy backorder a month ago when I saw it was expiring.

I have now read that Godaddy Backorders are worthless? If so, should I remove it?

1) Is it true that the domain pending delete will automatically end up at GoDaddy auctions?
2) Does my GD backorder hurt my efforts by bringing more attention to the domain?
3) What would be my best chance to drop catch this domain if it's current registrar is GD, and what is the timeline?

Thank you in advance for the advice.

Godaddy has no further rights in this URL. "pending delete": is the last step before releasing back to registry.

Here is my understanding of things:
  • After a domain expires, it has a long grace period in which the original owner can renew the domain with penalty
  • After that period, the domain is released. There would be another period before it is deleted.
  • However, before it is released, the domain might be on a pre-release auction. I believe GoDaddy uses SnapNames. NetSol uses NameJet. If the domain is sought after, you need to be at the auction
  • The pre-release could be botched. Such is the case of Examiner dot com
  • If a name is released and deleted, you can use DropCatch or other services to catch it.
  • If, however, multiple people backordered the domain at DropCatch and DropCatch caught it, it would go to another round of auction.
So, catching a deleted domain has gotten very competitive. If it’s a good domain, chances are you have to pay 3 to 5 fig for it. It’s rare now you can get a good one for cheap.
