We previously announced a search for a great brand name for an online service for sourcing domain certificates. The thesis is that there will eventually be innovative alternatives to the likes of LetsEncrypt that empower more people to secure their sites with robust technology. That search was described here:

https://www.namepros.com/threads/ssl-root-certificate-authority-ca-brand-name.1158491/

In the meantime, we have had some great domain candidate submissions. In order to select a winning name, we welcome your input on name selection through poll and discussion as we make plans to co-create another tool that helps make the pie bigger.

As for the list of brand prospects, we used every slot allowed in the poll software. There were many good ones left out unfortunately, but it is still a long list from some very thoughtful submitters who I look forward to highlighting among the top contenders to the extent they choose to be identified!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
lol .. actually .. pretty sure TrustCert was indeed supposed to be TrustCertificates ;)

Actually, we had both submitted:

TrustCert.com
TrustCertificates.com

TrustCert.com was shorter -- the other was longer than the specification so when I maxed out the number of poll options due to a limit from NamePros' software, I cut out some of the redundant candidates.

@Rob Monster , Hey Rob, what happened to the DnCert .com that I suggested to you last Sunday, how come someone else ended up registering it the next day on Monday. It looks like you liked DN plus keyword domains for your other projects and have now included DnCert .com in the pole which is getting quite a lot of votes.

I DM'd you regarding this after you'd posted about the same thing in the original thread..

It's a great domain and had been at the top of my list when the details of the contest were suggested, so I registered it -- Rob and I had zero conversation regarding the domain(s) I submitted until late yesterday...

Cheers.

My question was not directed at you, I would like @Rob Monster to answer my question. Good luck with your domain, now that you have it.

3 names stuck out for me in no particular order:

DNEncrypt.com -(i like better than “letsencrypt”!)

EncryptHere.com (Another one i like, with bonus alph order “e” in encrypt comes before “h” in here
which i feel helps memory retention, and flow 2 word

ProtectSSL.com the only one with SSL i picked, other than the alphabetical order, “P” before “S”
I just worry about other versions of “protect” !! protecting SSL.. lol! Yours is shorter!

i personally would not buy any with abbreviation “cert, auth.. etc” this is personal preference, unless you own the full word, of that too! Good luck, Rob!

Hey Rob! yu know Encrypt.com is actively listed :xf.wink:
I wouldnt go broke for that tho! Just thoug interestin

FullEncrypt

All other names can have one or more advantage, but FullEncrypt has all of them.

"Full" is a very comprehensive and powerful keyword; "Encrypt" is descriptive and SEO-friendly;
so, this two-worded domain name is very ideal.

All the best!

SSL is more of a marketing term than a technical term when it comes to Certificates. I think @Rob Monster wants something a little broader. Otherwise SSLCertification would have been the hands down winner! It's far superior to most of the others even if it's just a marketing term. Kinda surprised me to see that other SSL name there.

i personally would not buy any with abbreviation “cert, auth.. etc” this is personal preference, unless you own the full word, of that too! GL Rob!

Abbreviations aren't always bad, but the problem is that when using them as a brand, if the term is such that your sub-conscience triggers an "auto-complete" type reaction, then the brand has an empty/lacking feeling to it. Like you're just left hanging there waiting for more. Basically losing tons of "power points". Looking back at FullVenue, that's a great example of phonetic power .. you can say it out loud several times in a row and it sounds amazing each and every time. Most of the names in this list fail that test. In fact, most are complete non-starters and aren't even close to being acceptable phonetically if you want to be seen as a strong brand. Which is always important, but a million times more important when your product relates to security!

For a lot of them it's not just the abbreviation, but the word flow with the associated prefix or suffix.

While full words obviously make domains longer, they are SIGNIFICANTLY more memorable unless the abbreviation is a day-to-day commonly used abbreviation (which is not the case here, nor for almost anything technical in nature).

Particularly since unfortunately @Rob Monster did not say anything regarding his target market. Because while yes it's been mostly technically savvy developers who have been acquiring SSL certification to date, with the changes in Google (search and Chrome browsing) requiring pretty much everyone with a website to get Trust Certificates to be relevant to search engines AND even more importantly to browsers themselves (even small rinky-dink wordpress site). So in my opinion, using technical abbreviations in this case would be a mistake, because while some of the names in the list are actually not bad phonetically, they fail the recognition factor of what should be the average targeted end user (who are no longer just tech-savvy nerds .. lol .. but the average person with only just enough internet skills to set up a WordPress site).

ADDED: I submitted IronGauntlet .. which is a super strong sounding brand with amazing security imagery .. but it didn't make the list. I'm biased, but it would have been my first choice! lol

(Trying hard to be general and not to single out any individual domain .. lol .. still which this would have been posted in a non-indexable part of the forum)

I think a more brandable, short, tech type name is best. More broad and versatile. A name that reflects a high level of creative ingenuity.

I have one that comes to mind...

Cynto [dot] com

or maybe Connyct [dot] com

Something like that maybe.

IMO of course. :)

Boy i feel you there @Ategy.com

A reminder If u lose, your name still got exposure;
You can still utilize, Many were submitted, only 1

Got me thinking... Rob should have a variating
1st place $3K, 2nd place $2K or
$3K-> $1K >1K I think all would jump 3k!!
You still have $2K to spread out the love 2nd-3 based on ur 5K budget,w/o much decline quality imo

These not most liquid assets. (unless DN rlly sells) You’d be helping domain market liquidity, while servin epik! Might actual boost applications, who like lose? When u face one-to-whatever-odds, but when have 1st 2nd place (when # entries quality enough) otherwise keep 5K! Still lot!

I have not thought very deeply on this, and while @Ategy.com makes some good points, remember that many tech brands that we no longer associate with the abbreviation they started with, indeed started as a descriptive abbreviation:

  • Intel was INTegrated ELectronics
  • Microsoft was MICROcomputer SOFTware
  • Compaq COMPatibility And Quality
  • etc.

While we now look back as big brands that no longer associate with their abbreviation, I think in early days the abbreviation meaning is a useful early brand traction, while once they get big the fact that it was a unique contraction helps them have a nice brand.

Just my 2 cents worth!

Bob

Really?!? They removed my post that simply stated my three choices and my indicating I did not have any bias due the fact I did not have any names in the running.

It's all good .. I've had a couple debates with @Rob Monster a while back, and we most certainly don't see eye to eye on some things, I really respect the fact that he takes suggestions and criticism more constructively then most people. Now we mostly have good email exchanges on ideas for Epik. I think that him being open like that is a VERY big reason why Epik is growing so fast. Heck, I've suggested BUG FIXES to GoDaddy in the past, and not only did they not take the suggestion, but some bugs still remain sometimes YEARS later! The more I interact with Rob, the more I can figure out what he likes in terms of brands (even if I don't necessarily agree with his choices sometime technically or personally .. lol) .. so I'm not too worried, FullVenue most certainly won't be the last domain I sell him! ;) lol

That being said .. my biggest regret here .. I grabbed RemoteWriters (in .com) at closeout while finishing today's auction list for my blog at NameCult .. then instead of going back to checking for other names and buying it, I came here and lost track of time. Seriously .. losing the chance to get RemoteWriters for $11 .. arrrgh .. that sucks .. I need to go on a holiday NamePros for a bit! lol

Back to the topic .. While there are a lot of fundamentals in branding (many which are being overlooked with most of the names above .. lol), there is also a lot of person choice involved. That being said .. the further I get as someone inundating myself with names and brands day after day, I'm gaining the capability of seeing beyond my personal choices and placing myself in the shoes of the end-user .. or more importantly .. the end-user's target-audience.

That's actually ironically a part of the problem in a lot of cases, because a lot of end-users don't even think about their target audience when choosing a name/brand (possibly the case here) .. when in fact they should be the ONLY people that should matter. The only exception is when recruitment is more challenging than sales, or in cases of many B2B businesses when your target-market is effectively people in the same industry who understand the terms/slang .. only then maybe go with the cool "only industry people understand the meaning" name. Otherwise it's a mistake to go with industry abbreviations or words that the "lowest common denominator" end user doesn't know.

you have lots of posts off topic in threads on this site to start removing.
LOL where should they start.
I also submitted several names and one was supposed to be chosen for the poll but isn´t included. Same the last time when it was added later.
It´s Showtime! And I like it and there is nothing to blame because my submissions would´ve been without any chance. It´s the taking part that counts.

You do realize these posts will go away as well.:xf.smile:

The hoot of it all is that the post was very much on topic (reason given for removal). The only thing that may have rocked someones boat is the fact I listed my three favorites which are:

WebSeal.com
eCerts.org
DNCert.com

The only thing I can imagine is that someone that didn't get mentioned used the report button because their feelings were hurt!?!

Seriously I cannot believe that. Mods are struggling with their objective to give the best possible freedom to discuss I suppose. This is a poll thread and most recent posts are about names that are not included.
We members are a crowd of ambitious, strange creatures. Everybody loves his/her handreg which is the best of all times. Nice.

You've kinda actually reinforcing my point .. all of those were originally B2B businesses.

More importantly, when it comes to companies that spend 7 or 8 figures on advertising, it matters significantly less. However .. bad names do cost money because people are more likely to go to names that they understand and that they understand how it associates with what they're looking for (particularly in search engine results).

5 to 6 of my name suggestions are in the poll. But, the name i liked most and was short-listed previously missed out. The name was " Super Secured .com ". I am sure @Rob Monster has his reasons. Just making a mention of it.
