You can check age history, whois history regarding nameserver changes, web.archive for the actual content and backlinks pointing to it to see if it is spammed.

I use completedns(.com) to check dns records and archive(.org) to see what kind of content the website has previously had.

To check if a domain is black listed for spam, type "check domain spam blacklist" and look at the results. Most of these sites allow you to enter a domain. Enter your domain and hey presto!

There are many spam blacklists, so I'd recommend checking a few.
