As some have predicted for some time, Google is pushing Progressive Web Apps over native apps. The evidence can be found in the post below.

The big question, what does this mean for the .app domain extension?

"Upcoming changes to the AdSense mobile experience
Monday, July 15, 2019
The web is mobile.

Nearly 70% of AdSense audiences experience the web on mobile devices. With new mobile web technologies such as responsive mobile sites, Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) and Progressive Web Apps (PWA) the mobile web works better and faster than ever.

We understand that using AdSense on the go is important to you. More than a third of our users access AdSense from mobile devices and this is an area where we continue to invest.

Our vision is an AdSense that does more to keep your account healthy, letting you focus on creating great content, and comes to you when issues or opportunities need your attention.

With this in mind, we have reviewed our mobile strategy. As a result, we will be focusing our investment on the AdSense mobile web interface and sunsetting the current iOS and Android apps. By investing in a common web application that supports all platforms, we will be able to deliver AdSense features optimized for mobile much faster than we can today.

Later this year we will announce improvements to the AdSense mobile web interface. The AdSense Android and iOS apps will be deprecated in the coming months, and will be discontinued and removed from the app stores by the end of 2019.

Like our publishers who have built their businesses around the mobile web, we look forward to leveraging great new web technologies to deliver an even better, more automated, and more useful mobile experience. Stay tuned for further announcements throughout the rest of the year."

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Could this be the beginning of moving away from mobile phone apps (ios and android) and moving towards fully Web-based apps accessed through mobile browsers?

Yes, we are starting to see Google is really moving in this direction. They have been pushing developers into this corner for some time, but now they are doing it with a financial incentive.

At the same time Twitter has announced they have moved to a full blown Progressive Web App!

It's a great day for domain investors!

Finally. I have never understood the need for native apps anyway.

It makes sense since a lot of the apps simply serve Web-based pages anyway. And Web technologies are now mobile-friendly.

So if google controls the .app extension, they can continue to censor and control. Disallowing open internet websites to do whatever they please. Just Beautiful.

I no doubt agree with you on the politics of Google. However, it can be argued that moving from a native app based in the app store to a progressive web app based on a domain gives more freedom and control to those that own the domains.

I see this news as liberating and great for domain owners and web users.

A native app is usefull in those scenarios where it has to consume hardware api like games/video converters/Banking apps. If an app is only serving data from API than PWA's are better.

Clearly Google has a long term agenda and business plan with the .app extension. Since currently Android is the most widely used smartphone OS, they may want to replace the native apps with apps using the .app extension. It is conceivable that people will be able to access .app domains without having to type the TLD or just directly through the app store (Google Play).

However, there is a long time between now and something like that being widely adopted.

Especially since the major Asian smartphone makers (Samsung, Huawei, HTC, etc) are working on their own OS and ecosystem.

But I agree that this is good news for domaining since it means that apps will be accessed via DNS.

You mention it will be a "long time" for adoption. Today they have severely cut the financial incentive for many developers to build native apps. I believe you will see dynamic adoption as a result. Especially considering there isn't really anything new introduced to web users. Simply go to a domain and there you have it.

Most of the successful apps that I've seen are free with in-app purchases, not ads. I don't know how many apps actually make money with mobile advertising. But maybe the changes G makes to the adsense program will make ads less intrusive and more profitable.

I currently use iOS, and many of the apps I use are phenomenal and I can't see them being reproduced on Web-based technologies to the same level and quality. So native apps are not likely going away anytime soon.

Change always seems slower when your in it. Although, when looking back at change it can seem like it happened fast.

As an example, it seemed like the change from a VCR to a DVR took awhile. Yet, looking back it seems the change happened overnight.

Using the above analogy, I believe we will look at native apps as being antiquated fairly quickly.

You may be right. Web-based apps have been around since before Android and iOS. I really do hope that G makes the switch to Web-based and away from native apps. It would be good for domainers and Web developers. ;)

this will make for a far better experience than the current one

An important topic and informative contributions. Thank you for starting it @Internet.Domains.
Isn't one of the arguments for native apps that there is more security as in theory at least they were vetted to get in the app or play store?
This will undoubtedly seriously change economics of dedicated app production.

In theory yes. I found that on Android phones many of the apps actually served html pages like a browser would, less so on iOS. So potentially they were less secure. There is a reason why G gives away free SSL with every .app domain.

And if you read between the lines, I wouldn't be surprised if G rolls out a new Web-based framework just for app development.

If security is an issue than PWA's are a much better option. Consider that a native app has code downloaded onto your phone while a PWA is a website.

Another security development we are seeing is features added to an extension. The .app extension preloads HTTPS as a security feature.

We will also continue to see browser security features developed.

Point being, we won't have to clog our systems with all the nuisances of apps.

I didn’t know that, good news and hope so. I would drop Android immediately. I do believe the APP stores on both existing OS’s help with quality customer control with malware as opposed to wide open systems. I guess there will be a natural market acceptance that polices. Nokia and Microsoft failed with widespread adoption with their own Cell OS, right? So can only hope for the best. I wish there was open source Linux like push for cell OS’s and all search engines, so as to devalue Google’s control. Linux transformed people away from MS servers right?

a domain gives more freedom and control to those that own the domains.

And lends more market control to small companies and businesses, who need a domain. It will be interesting how this plays out with search if .App’s rank higher than .com’s or others.

For one of my forums I maintain separate iOS and Android apps, even though the forum is mobile responsive still it's not quite the same.

Just took some time-out to read up on the OS being worked on by Samsung and others, and it is being developed by the Linux Foundation:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tizen

Reports are that the largest Asian smartphone makers, which dominate worldwide smartphone sales, are developing their own Linux and HTML5 based OS's, in part due to threats of bans from Western governments to using Western technologies in their jurisdictions. G's move toward Web-based app development and away from native apps looks like a preemptive response. Without the Asian mobile industry's support, Android is effectively finished.

Thanks. Interesting.....Google can have complete control and dominance with PWA's as they control search and have a major influence with monetization of content. With PWA's, Google does not lose. They will be pumping it as a result....IMO
