I was considering registering the domain: HeelUs.com for just the reg fee, but I didn't jump on it. Now the domain is listed for sale on several sites for $3,500. Is their valuation correct - or is the seller a maniac who's asking way too much for the domain?

Also, what would you guys value that domain at, and how long do you think it would take to actually sell at that price?

I'm new to domaining and any help, tips or advice are all greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Were you searching GoDaddy? They used to have a problem showing domains as available, even when they were not. I don't know if they fixed it, though.

Personally, I think $3500 is overpriced. But, I'm not an expert.

I think you made the correct decision on not jumping on it. I don't like it even as a hand reg. What is it even? A brandable for heels? heel pain? Regged in 0 other extensions.

This is likely just a domainer who's expecting too much. A quick google search doesn't reveal a justification for this sort of price point. Usually if an existing company or companies already use the name (Heel us, Heel US or Heelus) and the domain would be an upgrade for them, then there's a chance that if they have the money, they'd buy it. Otherwise, chances are slim that a new company would come along, be super intent on a seemingly random name and pay such a sum. The only good trait I see about this domain (again, just by a quick check) is that it's been registered before a few times. First regged in 2006. But perhaps I'm missing something and there's more about the domain that meets the eye. Probably not a loss on your part.

Hi @Mcpherson .. and welcome to the world of domains! :)

One of the first things you need to know as a domainer is that asking price has absolutely nothing to do with a domain's value. In fact even the prices domains sell for don't necessarily equate to what they are or aren't worth. There are plenty of domainers who simply don't know how to price their domains or who don't know their worth, so they overprice them by a factor of 10 or 100 or even 1000 .. (or sometimes even underprice them).

Domain value is far from being an exact science .. there are plenty of indicators and elements that add or remove value from a domain .. but what someone else is asking for a domain has absolutely zero bearing on it's value .. unless it actually sells for that price! ;)

It's a misspelling of the shoe brand Heelys.

You did not miss a great deal. Nothing special or valuable about that domain. The current owner has unrealistic expectations. You saved reg. fee that you can now invest in a better name. Hundreds, or even thousands, of much better names drop everyday.

Before you move to acquire brandable names, try registering keyword names. Check NameBio.com and the Completed sales thread here on NamePros to check which keyword names are selling.

This has happened to me a few times. Its a hard call, on one hand, better to research before making a snap judgement to buy. But sometimes when its right you have to pull the trigger if its only reg fee. Looking into the history of HeelUs.com. The previous owner had it for sale for a year before dropping it. It was first registered 5 years ago (2013) and was held by various entities for sale. I personally would not have registered this name to resell.

Creation Date was today: 2018-07-17 17:51:55Z

From the GoDaddy Domain Appraisal Tool (Take with a grain of salt)
HeelUs.com
Estimated Value: $1,246

Could be used for a women's shoe store?

Comparable domains sold:
piius.com
Sold for $800
healus.com
Sold for $1,000
tilus.com
Sold for $1,001
ridus.com
Sold for $999
augus.com
Sold for $1,200
equipus.com
Sold for $1,288
tinus.com
Sold for $1,495

Est. time to sell - over a year...................or more............

Thanks for the replies guys! Glad to hear that my first instincts were right. Though it seemed like a sort of brandable domain play on words: "heal us" / HeelUs.com (shoe store type name) - it didn't seem like it was worth anywhere near that amount of money.

My rule of thumb: do not register a name that you wouldn't use for a real-life business.

Ha ha no bids on here either. Plus, I don't think that's what the search volume was when I looked it up.

I think it is an interesting play on words, Heal us- meaning make us better, but Heel Us, could be a brand for ladies shoes/high heels. It may be a tough sell, but could possibly work if branded right. Unless someone else thinks the way I just did and looks for it, it will probably never sell but sometimes startups think outside the box using this sort of play on words.

That's exactly how I was looking at it, a pun or play on words. Maybe it's a bit of a stretch though.
