Been quite active in my registrar and aftermarket platform explorations lately so my question stands .. and applies to all auctions whether a domain enters renewal, redemption, backorder, Godaddy closeouts etc.

In addition to first question, is there a special circumstance where a domain retains its age after expiration if there's a new owner / auction winner ?

Cause I don't see the point of auction listings including age if they'll be reset anyway...

That's all for now. TIA

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Anyone ?

I got a response from Godaddy and Dynadot about this, waiting for Namesilo's

So Godaddy says creation / registration date would reset to date of domain transfer to new owner after auctions.
Dynadot says otherwise for their platform .

It seems at the start however, they're both not sure. So I'm asking here.

Any domains I have bought on GoDaddy, in either the Expired or Closeout auctions, has retained its domain age when it is transferred to me.

To my knowledge all backorders result in resetting of creation date.

The other methods where the domain does not delete will retain/inherit the original timestamp/creation date with the exception of .EU, .BE and .FR which undergo a reset when transferred by the registry.

NB: I have read somewhere that some expired auction venues have started resetting the creation date of some auctions but cannot find the article again so if anyone would like to help to clarify this, thanks.

I give you one example.

a.com expires at Godaddy.
Bidders bid for it at Godaddy's auction platform.
a.com gets renewed.
Result: creation date maintains.

a.com expires at Godaddy.
Nobody bids for it at Godaddy's auction platform.
One person places a backorder at Dynadot.
Dynadot snatches the domain right after it drops.
Result: creation date resets.

Problem solved.

That's why many registrars have their own aftermarket auctions system to earn more profit without letting the domains which reside at their registrar drops. In such way when a domain auctions, and there are bidders on it, the domain just "switches hands" to a new owner.

That's interesting , Godaddy representatives I suppose are just clueless. Or perhaps a miscommunication with their tech department I don't know.

Twice I had initiated this inquiry via chat today, but same answers. An expired domain (pending renewal / redemption) might as well be a deleted domain.

Meanwhile, Namesilo is the same as Dynadot. So what's up with Godaddy Support. Is there no value in aged domains to miss that detail .. ?
