I registerd a domain 2 hours ago, virutally the second it became available.. And 2 hours later, I get this email:

The following domain name registration has failed:

SKYTOURISM.COM

Error: SKYTOURISM.COM: cannot register - already registered

We will evaluate the error and retry the registration if appropriate. If we are unable to successfully register the domain name, your account will be credited accordingly (allow one business day for the refund to be processed).

I'm super cheesed off because I was really happy to score that domain..

Not fair!

I registered about 12 at the same time, now I'm just waiting for more failure emails..

So what's the deal with this, do they wait 2 hours to actually attempt to register the bloody domain?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It's normal at GoDaddy and well known problem.
GoDaddy use cached whois / DB !

Means they dont check that in real-time.

I always thought godaddy did this to boost their revenue in their reports...(e.g., kinda like how rebates work). GD always seemed shady to me.

Yes !
There was some thread about that, and another thread about reputable whois services.

I think you can check domains with moniker or for com/net checking on verisign site.

I have an account at moniker, think I'll stick with them from now on

Whois Server Version 2.0

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to internic.net
for detailed information.

Domain Name: SKYTOURISM.COM
Registrar: MEGAZONE CORP. DBA HOSTING.KR
Whois Server: whois.hosting.kr
Referral URL: hosting.kr
Name Server: No nameserver
Status: ok
Updated Date: 16-may-2011
Creation Date: 16-may-2011
Expiration Date: 16-may-2012

>>> Last update of whois database: Mon, 16 May 2011 21:55:11 UTC <<<

Godaddy must be using the zone files to perform offline availability check.

SKYTOURISM.COM was registered today but since it has no name servers it's not included in the zone file. Provided Godaddy even has the latest release of the zone file (twice a day)...

Most likely, any domain with no name servers will be incorrectly reported as available by Godaddy.

Don't feel bad. The same thing happened to me just yesterday. I got the final kiss-off email from them today confirming the registration indeed had failed, despite the fact the name showed available, the purchase was confirmed, and they had already charged my credit card.

Of course, I will get the refund, but it is still a big frustration and an all to common problem with GD. One of which, I grow more and more irritated with. One of these days Alice....ONE OF THESE DAYS!!

Thanks mate, I appreciate your words.

I just got the second failure notice, for the same domain. They are still trying to register it lol..

Some how I think I'm out of luck on that one.

A member here at Namepros runs SaferWhois (dot) com. It shows real time whois and will show the moment a domain is regged or deleted. It is also secure, no one can see your domain search thru them. If you're ever in doubt about a domain's availability, and you don't want anyone to see the name you're searching (registrars are not secure this way), use SW.

:)

this had happened to me at godaddy as well. They do not let you to use the real time whois, when I called the godaddy support, they denied having non-real time whois. Maybe the support people use the real time one, but they certainly do not let the customer to use.

Thanks for the advice guys, appreciate it.

Received the final death blow this morning:

"Dear Paul Rogers,

Your purchase could not be completed, therefore we
will be refunding the cost of registration.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Thank you for your business."

Another thing I've noticed about GoDaddy is it can take them up to a full minute to secure the domain after checkout has been completed. To check this, next time you register a domain at GoDaddy, type the name into Dynadot immediately after. It may still show as available for a short time (as has happened to me with my last two registrations). It's therefore possible that someone else acquired the domain whilst GoDaddy was still processing.
