How to hide home address w/o private Whois?

To change our whois information do we have to do it through the registrar? will it update automatically?

I just used my college address, i hope that doesnt cause any problems. I hadn't realized ther was a thing such as whois and was quite surprised it displayed that sort of information publicly.
