thebutler what are you afraid of? Last time that is normal when some companies are being sold and bought by another web hosting companies. I think you need to give at least a try to the new web hosting provider

I think you will be able to use them for other projects. Joomla do not need windows hosting. But you can do what ever you need. That will work on Joomla as well

Can you recommend me of a hosting provider?

I agree with Sean, however getting started with VPS or even dedicated server is not vise. I think you ned to get started with shared host and then in future if that will be needed you will move to VPS or dedicated server
