Which TLD to rank well in UK?

I recommend .uk extension because choosing more specific domains will be very helpful for long run as well as by seeing the domain users should be in a position to know what it is about and from which it belongs too..!

there is no such limitations that if these many pages are there then it is considered as website and less than that it's a mini site. Google or other SE's will not look at that.

Can do-follow backlinks or a redirected domain hurt SEO?

We can see there are lot of things happening in search results continuously by changing positions just because of the New Search Engine Caffeine, as these changes are not permanent. You can get your positions back / other reason is that your site is in Sand Box.
